Dear All good day,

My car is P38 99y 4.6 bosch motronic Petrol. The becm has been damaged. Could i install GEMS becm instead of it since i could not find gems? Please help.

By the way i have Lynx scan tool from Britapart
 
I think the operation is basically the same but I'm fairly sure you would need keys that match the new BECM.
Beyond that, I'm not sure if it would give any other issues. I'd be looking at getting yours repaired instead.
 
@Rick-the-Pick question. I think it should work for the engine if you change the enginetype to THOR. Might be better with one off a diesel though. IIRC the GEMS is more tied into the BECM with things like air-con. The diesel and THOR are more cut and shut jobs where the BECM is more isolated.

Keys would be the problem. Engine mode is selectable in BECM settings.

Yeah, he'd need the full lockset and chassis number of the donor if he needed a spare key. Better seeing if Rick can fix.

or you can swap the logic board from his BECM into another highline BECM off the bay of E.
 
It'll be cheaper to get your becm repaired as your lynx tool hasn't the ability to program a becm.
How has your original becm been damaged?
The rule of thumb is this, if you're going to replace your becm, you must go like for like. Match those numbers on the front of the becm.
Get this wrong, it could end up costing you double the amount as a few on these forums have found this out in the past after they took the wrong advice from that chap called Doug, who seem's to have now disappeared.
My advice is repair if you can.

I am really appreciated your kind support in my country there is no dealer or where to repair main. Lynx has the option to change from GEMS to MONTRNIC or edc, rubust EDC. My prevuse becm was locked and wrote in the dash screen KEY LOCK CODE it means needs EKA WHICH I AM NOT HAVE.

The need for EKA code can be disabled in the BECM. But i do not know if Lynx can do that. If it works anything like Nanocom. You have diag switched on with ignition OFF. And select BECM function on diag. You should get a dash message "Diagnostic Mode. You can then change various setting within the BECM. You cannot change these functions with ignition on or when engine is running.

Yes I have entried the "Diagnostic Mode" & i have chosen Montrnic because becm was for GEMS & and my car 4.6 Boush montrinc. I started the engine it was cranking but no start?

I am not sure about the petrol engines but think that Motronic (immobilisation code) code works same way as Diesel. If you look in the engine control module you should see an "Immobilisation code". A four digit number. Take a note of this then go to BECM, go onto "Alarm" and find "immobilisation code". This number MUST be the same as the one in the Engine module. If it is not delete the one shown and write the one from the engine control module to the BECM. Engine should start.

Perhaps there is a clue in the name and someone has buried him.:D
 
As said by others - better off getting your original one repaired, or the vehicle info cloned onto a working unit.

I've found the later GEMS boards will run a motronic engine, but the early ones won't, so as Rick says - best to try and swap like-for-like if you must swap the whole unit, as then you're likely to have some sucess.
As wammers says, if the immobiliser code in the engine ECU doesn't match what's in the BECM, then the later Thor petrol engines will just crank but not fire up. If you have a really early GEMS BECM, then even if the code is matched, and Motronic is selected, it will still only crank but not fire up as I'm guessing the Motronic immobiliser coding wasn't programmed in until closer to when they were due to be fitted.

Rick-the Pick here in the UK is definitely the person to sort it out for you. I have the tools and could sort it aswell, but a) I'm away on holiday, and b) he'll be able to give it a thorough check over/repair if necessary and sort the lockout issues all in one go, which is almost certainly the better option if you have very little in the way of LR support or garaged where you are.
