Well, it will break down at some point. They will want to drive it socially and at that age that means 2am! They might also want to go away for weekends in it for long journeys. They are easily broken into and hard to secure or hide contents. Perhaps a more modern defender might be a bit more usable?

That said, a Series is a next best thing to a Splitty camper imo. Old skool cool !
 
Bought my son a 1976 2.25 petrol series 88 when he passed his test 18 years ago, insurance was dead cheap even as a 17 year old, his mates were running around in ford fiesters, Peugeot 206 etc, all long sjnce rusted away but my son still has his series though not for everyday use nowadays.

So I would say yes, go for it and they will be very safe in it too.
 
I think a series would work fine as a first car, I myself will be looking for a 88 petrol soon, and the insurance can be very cheap. I've had quotes from Aviva at £920, which is well below the price for a Fiesta or similar. That quote was because I looked at Series 3 vans or pickups, which came out far cheaper than staition wagons.

They do want cool.


And since they can't have speed and small hatches have not been cool since the early 80s (OK I used to have a Sunbeam and a Nova owning neighbour was scared of it!). I feel something like a series is just cool.

I wouldt go series as a first car it will drive them mad ,gutless on power, heavy on fuel ,noisy,rattly,cold,and breakdowns
ideal as a second car or a toy though

id go for a defender of some sort , I have 2 90's a 1993 TDI (aint on road as a v8 yet ) and 2004 TD5 , both of these are £1300 to insure together , 20 years old and 2 years no claims so not expencive to insure but buying them to begine with are not cheap
 
Wimps if you cant use one as your everyday car......and they break down no more or no less than a defender anyway, plus cheaper to fix, cheaper to insure and tax free if you buy the right year

fit a 200 and that sorts the power and fuel issue, for the rest just man the f*ck up, nothing wrong with them at all

I'm using one as a daily come rain or shine and to commute from my flat to Bentley for work.....

I've been driving Series' as only drivers for years. Haven't had any serious reliability issues
 
As Dr_Evil has said, my 88" series 3 is my first car

It is ideal, learing to drive in a series makes you learn how to ead the road, its a bit slow but you get used to it, plus insurance onmine is less than a corsa fully comp in my own name.

Its bloody good fun to drive too :D (When its actually on the road). Whatever people say, they're as reliable as you make them, only bits to fail on mine are the parts I never touched during the rebuild which in hindside i shoyuld have (the landy's been off the road 4 years so youd expect some niggles)
