Not really if you knock the engine off and free wheel down hill it make bad noise at low speed and fads out as the speed picks up ? Like pads down ((1/2 wear max ! I have checked)
It’s dark nights but off tomorrow so i will take it to bits and have a look
Anyone think it’s transmission related

Getting quieter when going faster is strange. Normally if its transmission related it gets louder with speed. Sometimes changes sound if in neutral as not under load so much.

Ha ha
It’s a cracker I hopefully will be back on tomorrow with a picture of pz2 bit I lost last weekend looking at the fuel pressure wiring
I will keep you up to speed ( don’t think it’s transmission but who knows)

When was the last time it go a full service. All oils filters and 3 hail mary's...

Service due soon
Oils done with driveshafts last year transmission side and no leaks
Brakes have a lip on the inside I noticed when I checked the pads so ? It could be that
It’s absolute class I hope it the prop bearing !
I kick with my right foot so no Hokey Cokey for me thanks

Take the prop off and then you will know, how are your one wheel up test results?

My back is not the best at the moment
And with Cumbria it’s always bloody raining but tomorrow is the day I think only 78% chance of rain so best odds I have had for weeks
I will post tomorrow

Prop off noise gone
One carrier bearing is really nosiest by far and with a wobble?
No play in the pto but could the ird still be gone ? thanks for all the help from everyone
Snapped a bolt in the bearing carrier any suggestions or drill and tap the way to go

Yer never know if the ird has trouble or not until yer replace faulty bearings and refit and listen to it under load. Yer can look for play by turning the rear pinion.

If its the bolt that holds the prop to the vcu snapped the try some penetrating oil and see if yer can cut a straight screwdriver line in the end to turn it. Trial and error. Yer can buy those reverse drills to get napped bolts out. I assume the prop is removed.

Yes it’s off
I will drill and tap I can’t imagine it making any difference if it’s a different thread to the rest

so I have a 50/50 chance of the ird gone
I have got some bearings coming and I will get it put back together next weekend hopefully fixed
Or more money

I think the technical term for that is that it is f***ked!

If the bolt snapped is the one holding the UJ knuckle thingie to the VCU, I'd have thought you really do want to be trying to get it out rather than tapping another bolt in. Be interested to find out how you go with it.

Another 'reverse' thing is like a reverse threaded socket thingie - they look like sockets but have a thread inside that is tapered - as you turn it, it cuts into the metal and turns it. Would depend how much of the bolt is exposed and whether it can get a grip. When my locking nut key for the wheels broke, my local LR stealership used them to get the nuts off.

Dunno how proficient you are and what selection of tools you've got, I'd be inclined to pay a visit to my local engineering workshop for them to use their experience on it - price dependent obviously!

The other alternative, depending on what you're 1WUT time was - would be to use the 'opportunity' to get a recon VCU. If you're VCU is good though, would be an expensive fix.

It’s one of the bolts holding the bearing carrier on to the floor of the freelander
It’s ok for access
The problem I have if it’s was in tight enough to snap the head off I am not sure a extractor would work?

Changing the oil in the IRD is the best way to tell it's condition. ;)

Drill it out with a cobalt drill in the tapping size for M8, then re-tap it to M8.

Taped it and a original bolt fits as normal

Will a kaput ird make a noise when the prop is off ??
Put prop back on and bearings seem fine, but definitely bearing noise
Now not bad and gets better with speed
Any thoughts

When mine was fecked it made more (knocking type) noise at low speed and coasting than at higher (30mph) speeds.

The case shattering will probably make a bigger bang if the gears jam at higher speeds than low though.

I hope it’s bearings
I will get it back off tomorrow and change the bearings this weekend
And post on here
