I still think it’s a bit like a resonance type thing. Certain speed, gear, rate of acceleration… Well that’s what it felt like to me. Is yer shimmy engine wobble? Could you set up hippocam or something similar under the bonnet to film from behind the headlight across the from of the engine? You’ll need to secure the camera and also put a light in there as it will be dark with the bonnet closed. Film the front line of the engine to see if it vibrates forwards/backwards at the same time as the shimmy. Bleep yer horn when the shimmy happens so yer pick up the sound on film so yer can compare what you see to when it happens. Mad int I. ;)

Yes camera on things it will be - I have a GoPro and mounts so can do.

When you were in the car it was a combination of this fault and also a fuel Injector problem - the injector stuff is now sorted - engine smooth and efficient.

I will film the drive shaft and see if the bearing I had changed is still the problem as I was then told there is also an inner bearing and although looked fine could be contributing. There is more up and down play in the offside shaft than the nearside. The offside is a Freelander Spares replacement about 6 months ago the near side a JRS one recently - it looks a better shaft so I am going to get one the same for the offside so they are matched.

I suspect though that it will end up in an IRD bearing problem somewhere! Drat!

I should know this but just to check - is my ABS on my 2003 TD4 operated through a magnetic sensor or a ring on the shaft?

Theres an exciter ring on the end of the shaft that spins past the abs sensor which in inductive. So it's a bit like a circle of magnets spinning round with a sensor detecting them.

When you say an exciter ring - is this something you can see? The reason I ask is that I am going to put on a new shaft on again and it is a JRS one with a ring on it. They say to remove it if magnetic ABS - so I will BUT I had a shaft fitted a couple of weeks ago same type but my guy didn't take off the ring - what would be the outcome of this?

If you look in this pic you can see the exciter ring on the end of the drive shaft. It's the ring of rectangles round the shaft just below the rubber boot. If the ring wre fitted when it shouldn't be then I guess there could be 1 or 2 problems. Fitted many mean it's physically in the way if not needed. Fitted and causing additional pulse signals to the abs sonsor which interfers with the signal the abs sensor wahts to see. Mine is a 2001 v6.

Yes that's the ring fitted to the new shafts - there is a note in the box saying if not needed remove - do I assume I need to remove them right?

But just thought I have abs so should keep them?

Mines a 2005 and doesn't have the reluctor ring , it picks up off the magnetic side of the bearing..........when was the change over date?

Int got a clue if there was a change. Below one of them changed. Some TD4 drive shafts are shared with the v6. Only thing I could suggest is you pm me your vin plate and I'll run it through microcat march 2010 and see what part it calls up. Will compare to my 2001 v6.

Hi

Here is the place I got the driveshafts from - they look well made, better that the Freelander Spares one I have on it and the prices are great - 2 day delivery.

RANGE ROVER CV JOINT BOOT KIT X2 CONE-GAITER-CV-DRIVESHAFT BOOT KIT CONE items in J R CV JOINTS-DRIVESHAFTS store on eBay!

I kind of think that leaving the ring on has no effect because if mine is picked up from the bearing like the rears it is magnetic and the ring is a long way from that. It fits fine with it so will leave it on to match the other side.

I dont have a lot of faith in this being the problem - its a long shot but it does mean I have matched shafts and if the fit on the other JRS one is anything to go by a better one.

I am now so determined to get to the bottom of this as the car is running to brilliantly except for this it would be mad to get rid of it now.

On second thoughts, I bet they changed when they did the facelift.

Mine is 2003 and the half face lift one - the rears are magnetic and the thinking about it the original shafts if I remember right didnt have a ring.

I cant see leaving the ring on has any effect.

who's you want mine or angels?
Was thinking of angleoc but if you want to pm me your vin number too I can put up the part numbers for all our vehicles. Would be nice to see if LR changed the part number over the years. If you put in an old part number on some web site they tell you the alternative if it changed.

OK I fitted the new shaft today, removed the ring because I have the magnets in the bearing - it was obvious when I go to do the job.
Relatively easy to do - undid the large high torque nut by taking wheel off and bringing the hub of the disc onto an axle stand - wife on the brakes and off it can - with a good long bar.
Took the lower wishbone bolts out and swung the leg out enough to get the outer hub through - then with two screwdrivers popped the inner one - a bit of fiddling to get it out but ok.
New shaft went in ok after I lifted it above the anti roll bar to get a better angle on the inner hub's entry into the ird.
Anyhow the bit you are waiting for - its just the same - wobble!!!
BUT I did a lot of prying with a bar and also got my wife to start it up while underneath and there seems to be a fair bit of twist in the engine - the nearside engine mount looks to be a lot looser that any other mounts.
Anyone got any experienec with this one - its not the Conical shaped one on the offside - it looks more conventional but I cannot find one on any sites yet.

does your gear stick shake around?

Yes but only when accelerating in 2nd and a little in 3rd - after the wobble period - seconds it is smooth and quite pleasant to drive.

What are you thinking? I have a new bottom tie rod.

Yes I am beginning to think its the nearside one as the engine seems to be twisting and if you blip it I can see the tie rid taking strain. It would match up with how it feels.

Do you know of a supplier for this part? There are lots for the offside but not the nearside.
