Ey up! Was at Peterborough LR show yesterday, saw some stuff there about Intercoolers. The retail hype says it'll make yer truck more powerful and economical - too good to be true? I'm seriously considering this, so any help/tips you can give'll be grand! (gotta 1997 Defender 90 300 Tdi - Diesel with no other engine modifications at the moment!)

This is where I admit the extent of my ignorance, my understanding is - yes I have an intercooler - but I can get a performance one that does all of the above? that sound about right?

dont know about 300,but on 200tdi the standard intercooler takes air that leaves the turbo from 130c to 100c,a bigger intercooler reduces the air temp to as little as 30c,improving density and so oxygen levels.
note;if u do up grade ur intercooler ur fuelling rate needs to be slightly adjusted but this is a little adjustment to the injection pump with a screw driver.
bigger intercoolers also improve torque as well as power by up to 30% and slightly improve fuel consumption, temp reduction in cylinder head is a bonus.
apparently the increase in power may accelerate the stress on the transmission !!
the only make i have read about and which got a thumbs up was Allisport.I didnt know all that off by heart,im looking into a bigger ic as well !!:D
keep me updated,i wont be able to afford one 4 a while

And there was me bein' all impressed wiv yer knowledge. :D Anyways will look at the Allisport versions and make some enquiries at me local 4x4 garage, couldn't do it meself like!

Thanks for the pointers Tookey and I shall deffo keep yer posted mate!:)

if you fit a bigger intercooler you will have more power but you need to open the ip up a bit so that you get more fuel to feed it, dunno about the economy but it will deffo up the power ;)

I'm larfin' 'ere Yella but I bet you ain't!! :D Thanks for that - I'll 'av ter get meself a glossary started.

You got the patience of a saint really aint yer Yella !!:p

yup fit a bigger intercooler....you get a s*** load of o power and low down grunt
iv got me pump turned up, full width intercooler, and turbo running at 1.1 bar pressure and it goes like stink and outperforms v8's :D
used to blow diffs with it until fitted arb's
currently its pumping out 154 bhp but im sure i can squeeze more out of it :D
danny

Bloomin' eck bogey - that sounds bloody great!! :D I'll av a read up on all that other techy stuff you mention to make sure I don't blow anyfin up meself!! I likes the sound of outperformin a V8 fer sure fer sure !!:D :D :D

o and thats when the engine is sh***** !!
due for rebuild agen next week or when i get time, i broke everythin on her t day

yeh well she a challange truck and it what i built her for so smiles all round but hey i killed her in style...i had 50 people + with the jaws wide open watchin me go up a vertical slope 80 degrees the inclometer was reading,
managed to drive half way by using just the rear locker then winch the rest o and won 20 quid for the bet that ..
1 i wouldnt dare do it
2 i wouldnt make it up
and 3 i wouldnt go back down it after
did all 3
danny
ps get a bigger intercooler she go like hell after ;)
mine a 200tdi btw

Cool! Deffo sounds like I need a performance Intercooler and a HUGE set o Bollox!!:D Bit hard for me I spose tho!!
Only been into offroading 6 weeks so I'm just finding my feet doing RTV nowt like what you doin' fella !!

ooo i dont like trial, did it the once and found it boaring
winch challenge is just pure guts and determination which i like :D
everyone preferes different things tho
where u based you can tag along if you want when i go for a play....wel when the other half feels like playing, coz she in 1 with me now cuz i hammered her 2 day :D
refuses 2 start
damn land rovers
wouldnt mind but she only 10k old since i built her
shows what hammering i give her tho lol
danny

You have given her a hammering mate.
RTV fine for me at mo, learnin about the motor and how to take the angles on the inclines etc. I'm based in Milton Keynes - where you then?

stoke-on-trent
thats a good way to get used to her, nice 2 c some people have sence and get used to their vehicals, and not just jump in at the deep end
danny

I'v just bitten the bullet so to speak and forked out for a full width intercooler from Allysport for my 110 200TDI CSW. I'm due to get it fitted in november sometime. I'll let you know how it goes, but I'm hoping it should help me keep the speed up on hills as when its loaded up with a couple of people and a shed load of camping gear its a bit sluggish to say the least.
