Admiral don't seem to accept any mods! Nice and cheap tho!
My quote with Highway (LV subsidiary) via a broker went up massively this year from £360'ish with all the mods (32 with no NCB to used on the truck) to £3,500 so I had no choice but to shop around. Especially as I need type one and two business cover.
Apparently Highway did not want my business as I represented a 'poor risk profile' due to the number of Defenders stolen locally to me
.
Anyway, after lots hunting around specialist brokers (most of whole seem to fall back to Highway anyway) I really was a my wits end so tried my luck with the mainstream insurers and was surprised that Admiral came in at £380 with the mods declared.
It took a bit of work to get it all correctly filed (supporting paperwork is NOT Admiral's strong point) but I got all my mods declared, sent them over the list of all the mods I have as a PDF (I always keep it up to date for insurance) and agreed on the categories of all the mods. After some negotiation I have a policy and a cover letter with acknowledgement that they will insure with the mods (even offered me extra cover for the mods that I declined as it is for 'racer' type mods, remaps etc.).
They work solely on the basis of allowing mods but ONLY for a fixed number of categories at any one time (5 I think), if you can get them to agree that your mods only fit into 5 or less of the categories you should be fine. Simple things like declaring the 'internal cosmetic modifications' and 'external cosmetic modifications' categories was able to cover off a lot of the non-functional stuff for instance, dash changes, trim, checker plate and the likes.
Don't lie to insurance company's, that just feels like it will bite you in the arse when you least need it but don't be afraid to negotiate a little even with the mainstream ones. We now have my GF's car on the policy also (multicar) and that lowered the 'per car' cost even further.
I am not expecting Admiral to actually be that helpful should I ever have to use them (fingers crossed that won't happen, the reputation they have is not great
) but at least I am confident I have the correct cover with them. In fairness they could not have been more helpful to me on the phone
, as I said however it took work to the get paperwork right.
