Hi all, just a question concerning insurance, I've had the misfortune this evening of crashing my Disco into a ditch I've had the insurance company come s recover it as the steering is knackered the drivers wing is smashed and front bumper is also smashed but the insurance company have said that due to its age 2001 Y reg its likely to be a total loss. My question is can I insist that they repair it?? As I can't afford to replace it for what they are likely to pay out. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Andy 😪

I am pretty sure I read somewhere that you can insist they do repair it as they have insured it!

Make sure they don't do it as a 'recorded total loss', that is not a Cat C or D

Buy it back from them and use the payout to get it repaired

No u can't insist that the insurance repair the vehicle but you can insist that you retain ownership and then repair the vehicle your self, the insurance will adjust any payment to you, unless u have an agreed value policy, accordingly assuming you have a good insurance company, is only when a claim is made that the pros and cons show up and of course read your policy.

a loss adjuster will determine what the cat is, if you claim and they pay out, front bumpers are scarce, so a big factor for them, but if you buy it back and do it yersell its upto you, a full metal winch bumper perhaps?

Good luck

Are front bumpers that scarce as there seems quite a few D2s that are now coming to the end of their life and there are lots in the scrappers yards ?

An insurance approved vehicle repairers would not use parts from a scrap yard would they, hence the the vehicle is possibly a "right off" and the comments from 'DDC' on the actions of the lost adjuster if new replacement parts are not available.

Ok thank you all for response I'm going to wait for the assesors report as to what is damaged I've also been advised to go take pics of the muddy road and been told to claim against the farmer for not having any warning signs out, recovery driver said I'm not the first that he's picked from there

some pics of the damage would be good, some good lads on here can help you if you have a chance of buy back

If you think you're going to repair it yourself because the insurance payout will be less than the value to you, do not let an assessor near the car as their verdict will go straight onto the insurance database - without any debate. Assuming he says its uneconomic to repair CAT C, you,ve got a permanent record that all future insurance co.s will factor into your quotes.
You will also have to pay for VICcheck (~£45), a pointless check of your VIN plates that follws any "write-off" & needed to remove a block on you taxing it the following year

if you can store it at home, that's the best way, as storage goes into account of the claim, i would want to see the assessor and push for a 'Cat D' . The front bumper will be the biggest factor and then paint for them, easy fix for an enthusiast,

Ok I have my Disco back, having spent 40mins this morning on the phone with the insurance company I have her back I have been told I get get quotes for the work and they will authorise repair as long as it's more than my excess! Which I found out today is £545 !!!!!. But any way I've had a look at the damage and will post some pics soon, but from what I can see it's going to need headlight, indicator, grill and bumper the wing is only slightly bent in at the bottom and will pull out but the metal frame the headlight and fittings sit in is badly bent. Am going to take to crash repair for quote tomorrow.

Just to update insurance company sent an independent assessor out on Thursday who has said that the car is repairable 😃, I now just have to try and get it repaired before Christmas.

I had a write off on a d1 3.9 lpg similar damage but also bonnet and wing. It cost me 950, they paid 1500 less 350 excess. They pay book value, not what you tell them it is worth.
