Evening folks, Just de oiling my air intake system after having bought a F1 2005 with a fossilized breather filter. Taken air inlet manifold off and currently leaving it over night in engine gunk remover. Noticed the intakes on the block are well fouled up. Whats the best way to clean them? bit worried about what I scrape off falls into the engine/ valve ports!

I made the mistake of hosing the inlets with brake cleaner when I cleaned mine and nearly pooped when I started the engine later. There was still enough brake cleaner there to cause the engine revs to run away, and diesel the engine so it wouldn't turn off for an alarmingly long time.
Careful manual scraping and the vacuum gets another vote from me. Careful stuffing of the inlets with lint free cloths can help.

Disposable clothes + pressure washer + torch...

...pressure washer lance down each branch of the manifold, and the EGR flange, torch down the bores or each branch to check its clear, be annoyed it wasn't clear, start again, rinse repeat a dozen or so times, and you'll see its shiney smoothe in the various branches & chambers, job done, until you see the black oily sooty sludgy aftermath about a 1.5 metre radious of you & the manifold, then you start the clean up, and realise you and your clothes are black speckled. The jeans are ruined, the teeshirt's only fit for rags, and your skin looks like you are playing commandos with cammo facepaint. Have fun, and remember how much you love the landy you're doing this to...

How did you keep water out of the cylinders? o_O

You only jet wash out the manifold when it as been taken off the car, the EGR removed, and the MAP sensor removed. Most of the time any gunk in the engine ports, will digested by the engine, but as above if you fel you do need to scrape any gunk out of the engine ports use an hoover also, oven cleaner is good to use, soak it for at least 2 hours more if you can, jet wash out then repeat if you have to which is 99.9% of the time.

You are aiming for the EGR to go from this.

It is also good to gut the EGR so it become an original bypass.

Have fun always wear rubber gloves to clean out the manifold.
