Nowt worse than ‘ good morning Pennine diesel specialist, how can I help you sir’. ‘We lick arse at any opportunity’.:(

Avin a mare with this ruddy pump now. It’s back on and running but I can’t get the smoke to an acceptable level. And it’s rainin

I’ve come in for a sulk

Managed to completely ruin my timing today. Decided to check the pump timing and it’s all gone arse over headboard. AGAIN.

Looks like I’m starting from scratch again in the morning. A word to the wise, never attempt fuel pump timing with the engine in. What a bleedin faff.

No luck again today :( Im starting to think the pump is now a bit lively for the injectors. Sorted the timing, cant advance the pump enough to stop smoke. Upped the pump drive a tooth and then couldnt retard the pump enough to stop the smoke. Elongated the pump slots but at the end of play, although much better it still wont retard enough and I aint taking any more ally out of the pump base.
I'll wack the injectors over the pop tester in the morning and tweak them up a few pounds to see if that helps the old springs in em.
Not sure if this is ever going to run as sweet as it did. I cant think why, everything is new

I hate Land rovers

I have never had to do a series diesel injector pump from scratch but as I understand it from the manual it is a proper arse of a job and everything has to be absolutely spot-on
Warn cam chain can affect everything

It’s a sod when everything is new.
I might re fit standard valves. I picked up some lightweight sports valves but I think they are more trouble than they are worth.

Turning into a saga this job. Then again when do they not.
Worrying about the injectors I tested them today what with my new pump actually pumping.
Hell fire. What a mess. More of a watering can effect than an aerosol. Was expecting something approaching a mist but got more of a gush. It’s the only thing left to renew so I’m looking for a set of new squirty ends for mi squirters.
I bet the wa##ers send me plasticine britpart ones

I’m hoping this ends the saga. I can then concentrate on all the other jobs it desperately needs :(

I feel your pain regarding never ending jobs. ‘We’ still have not quite solved the occasional rumbling noise problem despite following up on all the tips on here so in a moment of weakness and a loss of concentration I started sanding down the scuffed up and slightly dented corner of the driver side door which led to more sanding, red oxide, more sanding and a tin of sage green from Paddocks. She still makes me nervous when we venture out but she’s proper tidy atm.
I might cash in my brownie points and go for a rear prop shaft replacement even though the noise seems to be under my seat but I suppose a specific sound will always be difficult to trace when there is so much bl##dy noise anyway.
Good luck getting some control………….

I’m in a much better frame of mind when the weather improves. I hate working on it inside or when it’s cold.
Once I decided injectors stopped play on the engine l moved to new clutch rubbers on the master and made a new dust cover for the housing. Then onto bits of electrical stuff and a wobbly wing mirror. Bleeding tomorrow and not only the clutch, I’ve got to replace a rotted outrigger.

Onward and upward

If the noise is on the over run then rear prop slider being worn is a good bet.

Thanks for that tip. It’s definitely a rotating noise from something and can start after a mile or after ten miles but fades with gentle nursing. If I spend anymore time on trying to nail it down I’ll end up polishing the springs with a toothbrush.

I thought my jobs were a saga but yours tops them. I hope these work, I’m sure they were checked before being sent over…….

Wayhay.
New injector nozzles fitted, balanced on the pop tester and nailed in the head. Flywheel re calibrated along with pump drive (just to be sure) and fired up first time. Bit of white smoke for a few seconds on acceleration but well within a tweak if the rain allows tomorrow. Back in now sorting out dinner.
One disaster though. An errant elbow while doing a backward flip with pike to see the flywheel and another epic begins.

now I need a new fluid reservoir :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Glad I’m not the only one who’s arms bash something out of place when attempting to fix one thing! (See choke cable error on my post re sounds nasty ;-)

Rimmers came up trumps again and my replacement OEM fluid reservoir arrived this morning in its Britpart bag.

problem is I’m back in work now for eight days so it’ll have to wait. Again. :(

Two shifts and counting. The reservoir and fluid are sat waiting to be sworn at come Thursday.

Never actually replaced one before but it looks as simple as two roll pins, a couple of seals and two days bleeding.
