I'm still trying to get my series 3 2 1/4 diesel up and running but can't get any fuel to the injectors, I have plenty of nice air free fuel at the bleed point on the block but can't even get a dribble out of the injector ports before my battery goes dead after a good few minutes turning it over. Does anybody think an overhaul kit would fix this, as the kits are pretty cheap? Also I had the pump off whilst changing rings and big end bearings etc but didn't touch the timing chain or remove the crank or camshaft so in my head so long as the splines are lined up, aside from a bit of a twist on the pump the timing should be ok shouldn't it? Does one rotation of the pump = a squirt at each injector? Thanks for any help again!!!

Get one of these it'll save at lot of hassle ...

You've bled the low pressure side ? Fuel filter ok and full ?
Vanes stick on the pump sometimes if it dries our, try giving it a thump with a hammer handle ...
There are 3 bleed screws on the pump...one on the filter ... good luck ...
 
Thanks dippypud, yes I've bled the low pressure side and filter, oodles of air free fuel comes out of the bleed point on the block, but I was once reliably told that if there was fuel at that point the other bleed screw on the square casing bit didn't matter. I haven't however tried knocking it with a hammer, surprising for me as it's normally the first tool to hand! Any thoughts on the timing?
 
When you say 'had the pump off whilst changing rings etc.', what did you undo ?
 
What CAV pump do you have, a standard DPA with manual pull or later one with electric stop ?
 
It's a manual pull to stop. I just took the pump off the engine and removed the drive spindle to keep safe, but obviously I turned the engine whilst it was off to do the work.

Should be ok then ...bleed screw on round body (low pressure), is the one you need to bleed, you have got enough fuel in it ?

Sounds like an air-lock still ... make sure that ensure engine stop in in, (not out or halfway in, check on lever on pump that's its returning to run position) ...
 
Stop ****ing about and do it properly, crack the unions at the injectors open a bit and crank it. The bugger will soon bleed itself and fire. I ran series diesels for 35 years and never had bleed issues.

timing wont effect fuel to the injectors
 
Is the pump definitely going round? You won't get a squirt at each port for one rotation, it will only be one port.
 
Are you sure the engine stop lever on the pump is set at run.
And did you bleed the filter first.

Myself...never needed to crack the injector pipes.
