Simple question but I doubt a simple answer.

I think I may have one or maybe more suspect injectors. Symptoms - lots of white smoke on startup and v lumpy for 10 seconds or so followed by a misfire from 1500rpm onwards. It's always had a bit of a misfire around 2000rpm but things seem to be progressively getting worse.

What's the easiest way to tell if it's an injector issue and if so which one? I know it would be easier to take it to my local indie but that's no where near as much fun...

2006 FL1 TD4 which has just sailed through its MOT so I'd like to do the rightful thing and give the old hippo another year of amusement and me another year of head scratching!

Would there be any reason why the misfire only seems to start after the engine has warmed up or done about 15 to 20 miles after startup or is this just another Freelander curve ball?

You could have an injector failing when hot? Or maybe the rail sensor connection is breaking down when hot. Or even the crank sensor failing when hot.

Unfortunately faults like those can be particularly difficult to trace.
 
Would any of those faults store a code or not?
If I spray contact cleaner on rails sensor it appears to be ok for a few days. I had a new rail sensor 12 months ago as it was faulty and tick over was all over the place. Didn't replace the cable at the time as it already had 3 cables going to it, would that be right for a FL1 2006 td4? Maybe that might be worth changing if I can't get any codes?
 
Read Your post with interest as I have a 2006 FL1 Td4 thats giving me a headache I have overfuel situation when cold at around 2300 rpm and have changed just about everything,cleaned contacts on sensors serviced engine and finally after a leak back test showing loads on one injector I spent £360 on reconditioning my injectors and after refitting it was exactly the same.When up to full temperature it doesn't smoke a bit. My vehicle has been sorned since Nov 2018 so hasn't been road tested yet however a friend is coming round with some trade plates Tomorrow so we can go for a run to see if there is any other symptoms. EGR bypass kit fitted,modded breather,new MAF sensor,Air temp sensor,fuel filter and oil and filter etc etc etc.
I'm starting to think I may have to live with a bit of excess smoke when cold as there seems to be a lot of these around with similar symptoms.
I'll post a comment on what happens on road test if it may help others.
 
When I had an injector failing the idle was fairly lumpy and with the engine running just unplugged the electrical connector to each injector in turn to identify the one which was unwell as the idle settled down.
Lots of posts on here about injector replacement...
