I just checked mine as was doing the rear brakes for MOT anyway. If you don't have access to a 32mm socket or suitable 1.2m bar then jack the wheel up and put the wheel brace onto one of the wheel nuts. you should be able to make the wheel turn slowly without too much force. Doing this will force the rear half of the propshaft to turn while the front half can't so your seeing how stiff the VCU is.
If it won't budge then to double check the brake isn't binding jack the other rear wheel up, this should allow the other wheel to spin in the opposite direction. If the brakes are OK then you need to do the test properly to see how bad it is.

Just checked mine. All good. Looks like brand new one been fitted recently
Thanks for help

Mine looks new too, but it's 12 years old. The only way to check it is by doing the one wheel up test. ;)
Silly question how often do you need to check it ???
Shaun

That depends on tyres. If a mishmash of odd make tyres are fitted, the it needs checking weekly. If all tyres are then same, with the least worn on the rear, then a 6 monthly check is advisable. ;)

Just got all new tyres on
Will check once a month just in case. Had one's before and never even new to check that. Thanks again Shaun

They all look like new on the outside but it's the inside that matters. Most cars with over 100k miles could do with having it replaced or refurbed.
If it gives a good time under 1 minute with 5kg at 1.2m then your golden for another year or so.
So long as you keep your tyres at the right pressures that is.

Here's where it fits in the auto Freelander top hose (circled in red) The auto's top hose is quite a bit smaller then that manual's hose, but it does fit. I used plumbers silicone grease to help get the thermostat into the hose.

Hi I put thermostat in where you put your one
Heaters amazing. Temp at 12. Only worry I have is the fluid only dribbling in expansion tank. Is that ok.
Had landrover before but all petrol
Took her 10 plus mile run and all seems fine. Am I worrying for nothing
Blrad her about 5 times and once on 45 degree angle.

The system is self bleeding. Just keep topping up the coolant over the next few weeks. After a while, all the air will be out;) The return does only trickle a small amount back to the tank, taking any air with it.

Morning all. Can anyone assist with tips on getting the R5 stat into the slightly narrower auto TD4 top hose. I've been struggling with it for an hour now lol and drawn blood!
The od of the stat is about that of the pipe itself.
Been using plenty of heat and lube but no joy yet.

I used plenty of silicone grease when I fitted mine, then pushed it in as far as I could with a similar size pipe. Mine has the sensing bulb just entering the top hose outlet, which also gives sufficient hose to clamp on to the outlet.

heading home to finish it off now. Just got to push it in about another 5 or 6mm, hose back on, fill up and go.
