I had the measurements sent for that inline housing and the conclusion I came to was that the Rover hose is longer and that the LR possibly would not have enough room between where it would be mounted int he hose. Anyway, the Gates one is easy to fit so wouldn't worry and save some money for the next thing to go wrong.

When i look at the hose on this photo:
http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/attac...12628-line-thermostat-mod-td4-cooling-td4.jpg isn't it the same as on my freelander, but nearley the same as on the Rover, a solid hose. Also there is room to fit the thermostat.
To be shure, it's the upper hose from the enigine to the radiator?

Also i don't have to buy it, because i'm selling the Rover i can use that one.

I was thinking of going down this route, but decided against it.

I am having the proper thermostat fitted. 6.1 hours is the book time to fit a £43 genuine LR part!

I'm not surprised that some people fit the inline thermostat.

To me it looked like there might not be space. If you have the part then try it as I for one would like to know!

Have tried but failed to fit the inline stat.

I can't get the metal band off! Have tried a small grinding stone and a cutting disk, but I'm worried about making a mess of the hose. When you've cut through the band, will it spring open a bit, or does it remain tight round the hose?

Ok chaps been reading this thread and its something I considered last year and didn't get round to it, so time I did. Question, the thermostat everyone is using in this thread is 83 degrees but in my manual it should be 88 degrees, are you using 83 because you cant get 88.

illy

Go on eBay and search for Renault 5 thermostats. There are 2 one at about. 88/89c and another at about 83c. Gates seem to be the ones to go for.

Have tried but failed to fit the inline stat.

I used a small grinding/cutting disc on a dremel type thing and just took it gently. Came off no probs and didn't cut the hose.

Mines is the Gates one in the link Epicuser posted, it has 89 degrees stamped on it and I have watched the water temp on the Scangauge 2 go up to 88 degrees then begin to drop when the stat opens.

I used cutting discs and then grinding discs on my Dremmel like Spacemonkey to cut the band, take your time, it's not a race and you'll get there.

Freelander gets roasty toast now, I keep having to turn the heater down because the cabin gets too hot.

88/89 C and it sits almost exactly at the halfway line of the gauge. :D

I got my local garage to change the proper one and its spot on. They seem to fail open and not allow the engine to heat up properly.... even with the FBH running!

I collected my car today and it is spot on.

I've done this fix today. A couple of points. The stat-in-housing will not fit, there is not enough length of straight hose next to the engine, and also it is designed to fit in a tapered pipe, narrower at the engine end. Of course, it may be that later TD4 manuals than mine ( September 2001 reg ) are fitted with a different top hose, which may accommodate the housing.

I also had to remove the inlet manifold in order to be able to get at the top hose clip, absolutely no way to be able to do the job otherwise - I also removed the hose from the car, this made fitting the stat considerably easier

I also found that it was not possible to get the Renault 5 stat as far into the top hose as the pictures in the Rover 75 "how-to" show. Whereas they show the bulb of the stat quite a way inside the hose, I had to leave 10mm or so of the bulb outside the end of the hose, because the main body was then against the first bend, and could go no further. However, all works well, temp gauge now at 9 o'clock after 5-6 miles, and much more warmth from heater. Well worth doing !!

I had the bulb more or less inside the plastic housing the hose clamps onto and all is fine. The Rover 75 top hose is different, hence why I suspected the inline housing won't fit, which you have now confirmed.

BIG improvement isn't it? Worth doing even if you plan to replace the original stat later as you can always remove the Gates one.
