having problem with ignition light not coming on, i have got power up to the bulb from the alternater brown and yellow wire, and the white wire goes to the fuse box, bulb is ok , power at the bulb holder, if i earth the bulb holder it comes on

Errmm I think you have answered your own question, if you earth the bulb the light comes on.......sounds like an earthing issue to me??

What voltage / wattage bulb do you have fitted think it should be 2.2W check voltage in manual.
The bulb earths through the alternator windings providing a current to excite the alternator on start the alternator voltage rises to the same as the ignition feed to bul so bulb goes out.

Volts from the alternator when the engine is stationary implies the regulator is fried - is it charging properly? It's possible to replace the reg but a new alternator is easier and you can uprate at the same time if you want....

Sorry for late reply, been away for weekend, first of all its a reconned alternater i had it done, so i am in the process of a total resto of a series 2 safari station wagon, and i fitted a different bulkhead and wiring loom so i have started with the ignition light wouldn't come on so i have two wires going to the ignition bulb, one yelow and brown exiter from alternater and one white wich goes to the fuse box, the bulb holder is is isolated from earth with a rubber/plastic piece on the bulb holder, so i assume that it shouldn't earth but if i hold the bulb holder side on to earth the bulb lights up, so it seems set up right, but bulb dont light when igntion is switched on

Have you got a good earth connected between battery and engine?
If that is ok earth the yellow brown to engine at alternator if light goes on fault in alternator providing engine is earthed ok.
Which alternator do you have original one with plug 17ACR or later version with seperate connections A127?

Yes battery earth direct to engine block and then from there to chassis, its the smaller alternator i will run a seperate earth direct to bulkhead and try that

What a ****, should have gone to specsavers, had a closer look today i had renewed the yellow and brown wire from alternator as it was missing,i had connected to what i thought was the brown and yellow in the loom and found i had connected it to the white and brown oil pressure wire, so its fine now, thanks

I've been to Specsavers, and I'm afraid it doesn't stop me from missing the obvious.

I went to Specsavers, I came out £200+ worse off and my new glasses aren't any better than the old ones. Bloody rip off merchants.
