Hi all

I have recently purchased a freelander td4 SE 54 plate so has the BMW diesel engine. First time I have owned a Land Rover and I love it, except just recently after about 20 min of driving when the engine is hot the idle is becoming very lumpy, and at junctions it sometimes cuts out. I have had a look around on the net and some suggets it is the MAF sensor that needs cleaning so I will give this a try this week. I do not have great mechanical knowledge, but if anyone has come across this problem before and advice would be greatly appreciated. Apart from this problem it is running fine, but this could become dangerous at junctions if it continues.

Regards

Chas

Hi,
One way of identifying MAF problems is to disconnect it from the system temporarily. The ECU will then substitute for the missing information and if an improvement to the problem is obvious then you can usually assume that the MAF is giving bad information. I have yet to replace any MAFs on our vehicles, I clean them during annual servicing with a good quality electronics component cleaner sprayed lightly from the aerosol.

You should also do a full service, & make sure you replace the crankcase breather filter/valve assy & add plenty of injector cleaner to your fuel but Chaser is probably right about it being a sensor or connection.

If it's doing it at idle it's usually the crank sensor. If it was doing it under load then it would be cam sensor.

A simple diagnostic check should be able to verify this for you.

The cam sensors output is only used at start up ratty so shouldn't give any problems once running...:)

Cheers All for your posts, I am going to put into the garage as I could not get out the last star screw to access the MAF sensor, someone also mentioned to me the idle control valve on the back of the fuel pump may be playing u also.
