Back home on me island after a night in the big smoke
Took daughter to look at her first car and drove it home this afternoon.
Now the fun starts taking her out driving
I’ll be needing something for me nerves
I taught both my kids and two grandchildren to drive, all passed first time.
Started by making them start off and stop time after time until they could do a wheelspin start and emergency stop on demand without even thinking about it.
Then somewhere quiet to drive in figure of eights, reverse in figure of eights, reverse in a straight line faster than walking pace etc.
Not been out on the road yet !!
Once they could handle the car and got used to how wide it was and how the brakes work, how much input to give the steering for a given result they were ready for the road.
You can't expect someone to concentrate on driving a car when they are still thinking about steering, braking , indicating etc, once they can steer, stop and start naturally then they can go out in traffic and just have to worry about signs, road positioning etc.
Lost count of the number of driving instructors with a hand on the wheel steering for the pupil, they must be terrified !
All my kids are very confident drivers, also taught them how to drive fast and safe after passing test, better than leanring the hard way.
Gave my niece a lesson before her test as she had been paying an instructor and she couldn't reverse around a corner. After a few attempts reversing faster than she was used to to she got it, I told her it doesn't matter how many times you have to stop and do it again because each time you learn something and you have to make mistakes to learn (she passed) :)

We went to the ferry terminal early yesterday afternoon while it was quiet and I had her practicing starting off and coming to a stop followed by a few 360’s around the lorry park. After a bit she started to get the hang of it. Little steps and all that:)

Thats how I used to teach fork truck driving, in small sections. Once they got the hang of one section then we moved on to the next and not until. It always amazes me that driving instructors take complete novices out on the road. I remember how overwhelming it was to drive a car for the first time.

My son had been driving the Landrover and tractors for a while before 17 so it wasn’t so daunting for him. It was more reining him in from being too confident.
I’ll take daughter to somewhere quiet again at the weekend and do a bit more start/stopping then maybe a mile along a quiet straight bit of road to get up the gears a bit

That's the problem when living in a built up area. Where we lived in Buckinghamshire all the car parks etc were monitored or locked at night. I left it to the pro's to teach her. I sat with her a few times but she scared the crap out of me and still does!! I was fortunate and learned off road way before I was old enough to go on the road.

I was driving old tractors and series landrovers at 13 so I wasn’t worried learning to drive. Luckily if I can get her out of bed on Sunday morning, there won’t be anything on the road here and there’s a road that’s arrow straight for about 7 miles :)

One time passwurd to yer email or fone is considurd a safe eye'dear as a feef wood need access to one ov them to confirm the person asking has access to one ov thems. Adds a different dimension to security which is a good fing.
As all this stuff, i.e. my lappy, is kept at home, they'd have to be standing over me with a gun or a knife to make anything happen, and in that case I'd be just as stuck. I never do this stuff on my phone. In fact they have to ring the house phone to make anything happen. I could deliberately feck up a pin number in those circs but they'd hear the number coming in over the phone.
So that is my thinking. Faulty or not .
Never use my mobile for any of this stuff. Got better things to do when i am out and about!;)

This is why farmers' kids pass so fast. My farmer's son mate passed the day after his 17th birthday, (He'd had two lessons on his birthday) and the examiner said he drove as if he had been driving all his life. To which he said ""Well yes, almost. Can you drive a combine?!"
I like the sound of your technique. All driving instructors should do this but most don't.
I once took a girlfriend to a disused airfield outside Bath and let her sling my company Cortina around. Before she even got her provisional licence. Gave her a lot of confidence and she learned really quickly. She knew she couldn't do any harm. (Don't think the company would have been very happy had they known.) But it was flat and deserted, and by then just part of a farm.

anyone understand about statutory sick pay? my company says they will only pay 6 weeks of it
i've been off less than 6 weeks and have a value for 'unpaid sick leave' on my payslip :(
According to W, (ex accountant) you need to look at your contract, it'll depend on lots of things, like how long you've worked there etc. The company EDIT must pay it up to 28 weeks, if you are eleigible for it.
see:
https://www.gov.uk/statutory-sick-p... your employer, less than the statutory amount.
https://www.acas.org.uk/checking-sick-pay/statutory-sick-pay-ssp
This tells you a bit more about the law on it
https://www.gov.uk/statutory-sick-pay/eligibility
But whether you can get more sick pay paid by the company and for how long will be in your contract.:(

I think a lot of companies are cutting back on the length of time they are willing to provide sick pay. As said, it should be in the contract of employment. Good companies have a proviso saying extended sick pay will be paid at the discretion of management. This is to stop lead swingers and provide additional support to favoured staff.

Sadly they are also looking to get rid of people with health problems.
Our daughter with Long Covid was eventually got rid of. Luckily our other daughter lectures in employment law and was able to go with her to the tribunal. They got rid of her based on all sorts of spurious sh!t based on nothing and in the end were forced to make her "redundant" and it cost them a lot more than they wanted to pay.
You are usually a bit better off if you a public service worker where you used to get 6 months on full pay followed by 6 months on half pay, but this may have changed since I retired in 2015. And even then they would try to get rid of you citing "long term illness" as the reason.
