.... some small 4-flute cutters arrived from Amazon, so I had a little play.
Nothing fancy, just tried to cut a slot in bit of round bar steel, seemed to work alright. I was a bit sceptical after seeing all the Youtube naysayers saying these little things are only "toy" lathes and not worth the space they take up.
I suspect there are plenty of men in sheds turning out lovely little steam engines and such on mini-lathes and mini/micro-mills that will disagree. :D

I agree Dan, a lot of people just repeat parrot fashion as they have not owned or even tried making things on hobbyist equipment. You will find that as long as you take sympathetic cuts you will easily achieve the things you wish to make :)

I am pooped tonight. Spent the day helping dottir and her partner loading a luton tail lift van as they are moving house. Furniture doesn't get any lighter as you get older :(. Been removing loose brickwork and preparing for a new lintel over me patio door this week, back on that job tomorrow. Wimblowdriver Towers was built without any lintels on the outer brick skin, they didn't back when it was built - just laid bricks over the timber window and door frames. But that's no good for the modern plastic windies which have got the load bearing capacity of a matchstick. Once I get that job finished I can get a noo french door

Not been on a mill for years, but when I was (just manual) you got a sense for what was happening at the cut, from both the sound and the feel. Very rewarding regardless of the machine size I should think. A lovely thing to do.
