So you came back with two boats then!
I will reply in a min, put it this way, I started at 2 o'clock going to PC world to pick up the card, two trips each an hour long to PC world, one system restore, two online chats, one of which resulted in me being led to believe I was being guided by a Norton tech, who took over my pooter and promptly tried to scam me. The ew Norton is finally downloading as I post this, at 00:39.I would be interested to know how you get on with this as I am contemplating doing similar. Having just pensioned off Norton and their automatic renewal, I think it might be a bit unwise to get a Norton one at this time!!
Cos I isn't clever enough, or enough of a geek, to know any other way of protectin my pooter!what do you want that for??
how did you find the scammer? Search google and his advert popped up, or you received a pop up on yer phooter at just the right time to call for help?I will reply in a min, put it this way, I started at 2 o'clock going to PC world to pick up the card, two trips each an hour long to PC world, one system restore, two online chats, one of which resulted in me being led to believe I was being guided by a Norton tech, who took over my pooter and promptly tried to scam me. Where there is a Kev there is a money making opportunity.I cant see how they can achieve the space & charging points for the countless leccy motors
our local town has 6 & they are constantly full. Think I'll start building a massive generator to
tow about & get all the scattered flat ones going.
So many question from a guy who is orf to bed!how did you find the scammer? Search google and his advert popped up, or you received a pop up on yer phooter at just the right time to call for help?
Was it the scam of getting you to give them access to yer phooter and they want to go down the route of tech support and charge yer?
Buying from a shop is no different to buying online when buying anti virus software, Yer still need to go online. Most of the boxes yer buy these days don't include any software. All downloaded. Did yours avva a disc int box?
Eye stayed up ter make sure yer was ok with the scam problem. I watch "jim browning" on youtube. Search for him on google. He and a number of others chase scammers and p*ss them oft and try to close them down.So many question from a guy who is orf to bed!
As far as I was concerned I was on the official Norton website asking for "support", I chetted with a guy for a while then he asked if I'd be willing to take a call from a tech guy, so I sez yes, then he talks to me and tells me he needs to take over my pooter to sort me out. Once I let him do that he spins all over it telling me/ "showing me" how much I have been hacked and showing me that I "need to get hold of other software called "anti hacking tool kit and Hitman pro, at £189.99 per year!
At which point I warned him that this was looking like a scam and that wifey was an IT auditor and I was putting her on the line, as she'd just walked in. She gave him some choice expletives and pushed the pooter's off button.
When I recovered consciousness, I explained how the git got control, she calmed down, we disconnected the hub and set about clearing recent downloads, uninstalling progs, and in the end did a system recover. Which left the pooter a bit slow to work but the fecker didn't get anything.
It then took umpteen goes to get Norton on!
I originally wanted to buy it online but the reviews of it were so terrible and I had never had a problem before buying a code from a shop, I decided to do it that way. The problem was Norton was unable to uninstall its own software on my machine from a year ago when I last used them. but we got there eventually. There were other problems too, but i mkanaged to sort them myself.
Feckin hate the things!
You is bang on with a lot of this.Eye stayed up ter make sure yer was ok with the scam problem. I watch "jim browning" on youtube. Search for him on google. He and a number of others chase scammers and p*ss them oft and try to close them down.
What yer has described is a common problem. They ask for access then start finding faults. The typical one is to open the dos prompt the run the tree command. That takes a while to run, filling the screen with thousands of lines of a chart as it goes. That gives them time to manually type there's a fault, which appears at the end on the screen, when the tree command ends. Like: "you phooter is infected with a virus"
They then use the network commands to convince yer there's multiple connections to yer phooter from hackers. There will be multiple connections as standard anyway. They encrypt yer password file to stop yer entering yer password at a later date (older phooters/software only) and set about getting you to pay. Disconnecting the web or simply switching oft disconnects them. But yer still need to delete the software they got yer to install, which yer has done. If not then they can get back in at a later date.
