£430 if I have it right in the pot for pontypridd scout group :D

Phoned BCT outdoors and waiting for an email with price list, hoping to have choice of 3 types of tent to choose from by end of day and prices.

I agree with Tazz the traditional type tent cared for is most durable if we can afford them, also there is talk of wilderness hiking so that brings weight consideration into account.

yu still want me to contact local peeps as they may be reluctant to help somewhere a long way away (not a local charity).

Also be forwarned - some companies dont see the Scouts as a charity (legally they are).

MHM I have only 2 points of greatest importance
1) We get best quality kit and value with donations we recieved.
2) Prompt dispatch of equipment to scouts when we have a buying decision.

please ask your contact's.

I've some time between next appointment, will see what is on offer locally as well.

Righty ho,

Managed to grab a session with Terry (Group Scout Leader [Scouting Boss]) last evening.

He said that for our needs, ideally modern material hike tents would be the way to go as they are way, way lighter than canvas and easier to store/care for, which I think backs up what I've mentioned before.

Our plans include hiking the Scouts/Cubs into areas and this means that size/weight of gear is paramount - canvas is horrendously heavy, moreso if it gets wet.

BCT stuff is very good and mainly canvas based - but very expensive when you look closely at it - for one BCT tent, we could be set up with upto 10 or more 'modern material' hike tents from the likes of Go Outdoors or the like. Bearing in mind that when I've been on major camps such as the Malvern Challenge, any groups with canvas tents turn up with a trailer full of tents and little else due to space, whereas groups like us can roll up in a Disco or tidy sized estate car and that has everything we need as we've opted for modern materials over canvas.

So, in summary, our preference would be for 2/3 man hike tents in modern materials - as its 'end of season' there should be some bargains about.

With regards to Fanatic/BBs off of the September camp - Terry was very positive but there's a few spanners in the works - he is our camp permit holder and is away for a few weekends in September, I also forgot (shame on me) that Emilie's birthday party is taking place on one of Terry's 'free' weekends and we are at a wedding on the other 'free' weekend!

There's also the H&S/Scout Association rules that come into play.

Cubs have to be sheltered in alternative accomodation during adverse weather/conditions.
Each and every adult - parents/helpers/etc MUST have a valid, up to date Scout issued CRB/DBS. They usually take a minimum of 6 weeks - my latest one took 8 weeks, and I'm regularly CRB/DBS's as a teacher - it takes longer for a 'fresh' one!!
The area team that the camp is to take place in must be notified at least 14 days prior to the event, should the site cross Scouting area's all area teams need notifying.

So as you can see, unfortunately, both for us as LZers and as Scouters. The rules and personal situations have conspired to rule out what would have been a fantastic event.

so doesn't sound insurmountable, scouts in one field and anyone else in another with out crb
adverse weather is called pack up and go home shelter in mini bus.

worth pointing out in HSE crazy world

Fanny,

Tell me about it!! I get quite irritated by some of the rules and regs we have to follow.

The amount of 'a£$e covering' is beyond - we are not supposed to burn pallets on scout fires - so what do they want me to do - chop down the trees on the local common or 'waste' money on buying firewood?!?

I continue to use untreated, broken pallets/wood from the local retail park, mainly from the independent tile outlet and from the caged waste left for collection at the rear of the major DIY store - managers at both places know me, and are perfectly happy as it means they get charged less for waste and its helping us save a bit of money.

The CRB/DBS one is most absurd - we have parents who are great for stepping up and driving the kids about - back and forth group meetings, camps etc. They have known the other kids often since they were babes in arms, yet under the rules they need CRB/DBS checks which is ludicrous - so at a local level we allow them to sort it between themselves so to speak. It also means we aren't supposed to have parents attending events such as cooking evenings etc.

If the people who come up with these rules followed it through to its crazy conclusion, most fund raising / fun stuff would have to cease - such as bag packing in the local supermarket or things like our 'Chip Shop Challenge' where we have a bag of chips in every 'chippy' in town and then rate them and award certificates as we'd really have to apply for CRB/DBS certs on every one in the shop or who could come into contact with the kids!!

I've asked at local place, tent salesman on lunch-see what they can offer by phone

ok locally no go
BUT
contacted Highlander Outdoor who at first said they wouldn't deal with non wholesale enquiry but as one off
1) look at 2 man tents on their website and pick 10 (will need to look at model price on google)
2) email what we want and they will see if they can discount them to £450 for 10
3) supply scouts delivery address and pay via credit card over phone

£430 if I have it right in the pot for pontypridd scout group :D

£430 + £15 from Flatlander and then I will add another £5

£450 in the pot, magnificent and if we can get a deal with tent company= cracking:D

Wow!! Thank you each and everyone!!

Fanny,

Just taken a look at Highlanders range - some tidy looking bits of kit.

With regards to what we'd like... here's the list pop pickers - I doubt very much we'd be lucky enough for the Highlander people to say yes to 10 Aeolus 2's, but who knows?!?

I've listed a top 4 from their range - as I said I doubt they'll do 10 Aeolus's, so Hawthorn 2's or Blackthorn 2's would be fantastic, if they can't won't stretch to that would Juniper 3's be available.

1. 10 x Aeolus 2's
2. 10 x Hawthorn 2's
3. 10 x Blackthorn 2's
4. 10 x Juniper 3's

Maybe even a mix - but obviously 10 the same would be better with regards to splitting them between the scouts for hikes etc

Cheers
