Where do i start ..well i have liked Land rover defenders for many years ..late 70's onwards but never been able to afford one .or even drive one as yet.....right now i have a fiat 500 ...well now i am 58 and have drawn of my works pension ..not a lot ...but a lump sum of £50,000 and also £112 per week payed into my account which has enabled me to drop my work hours from 40 to 26 ..so for 26 hours per week i would bring home about £362 ..i own my own house , no mortgage or rent to pay , just electric , council tax etc etc ..i planned on saving that £50,000 for peace of mind , not having to worry about any bills and possibly when i reach 60 to retire ..THEN i see the most awesome Landrover 90 pickup for sale ..10 years old , just 40,000 miles on the clock , immaculate finish , looks brand new , all new leather seats put in ..but here is the crunch ..£30,000 !! now i could buy it right of ..but its a big price to pay .and it does not help having covid travel lockdowns so i can not see it , sit in it , drive it ,the garage video it for you , so you can see underneath etc etc and deliver it to your door ..online purchase ..its my only chance of ever buying one and if i dont get this ..someone else will !! have been looking whats in local garages for the past 3 years but nothing has captured my attention as this one has ..right now i feel like do i take a chance and jump in the sea , i might drown or stay on dry land but never get a chance to swim ..£30,000 is a lot of money but its in good condition and they all seem to be going up in price ...?
 
Dont do it, it is too much out of your ready money fund.
Of course you don't have to listen to me but, if you have already spent 3 years searching, waiting until you can safely travel/meet people will be the best thing.
There is a large LR club in your area, look for Devon & Cornwall LR club, find out where they meet, go along, join, talk to people, odds are on someone will be selling a genuine 90, certainly won't be as perfect as the one you are lusting after, but there will be plenty of change to get it up to spec, and still have a wedge left.
 
Why waste all that money on a vehicle that'll only get stolen, is horrible to use as an everyday form of transport, and will likely be taxed off the road in a few years anyway.

This is assuming the vehicle actually exists in the first place, and it's not some scam to part you from your retirement fund.
 
If you buy in haste you will live to regret it as the chap said enquire at the land rover club in ear shot to you. Better to buy a a good used one and suffer like the rest of us. At least you can enjoy yourself more tinkering than fretting.

No definitely not you'd be a fool to do so, as said it would only get nicked, and I'd go nutty if a 30k 90 insured for 15 was stolen and/or worse torched!

I'd rather have a rough cheap one, if at all atleast I wouldn't be ripping my hair out of the worse was to happen, and hey where is the fun in a mint one ;)
 
With land rovers it is all about condiiton, and all the glistens does not always shine especially underneath.
You might actually find the prices are not rising as much or at all, especially on top end priced stuff, keep monitioring prices and see what happens this year.

I would keep your 30/50k, do not let it burn a hole in your pocket, once it has gone it has gone.

I wonder if you could build a new one for less than 30k? you need a donor for reg docs etc, but that can be any model going.
 
I agree with all of the above. If you've never owned or driven one, you might be in for a shock. You would be better off getting a rough looking one with a decent mot for sensible money. Then at least you'd get a taste of ownership and if it's not for you, you haven't lost much money on it.

Ridiculous money, you could buy 5 driveable Defenders for that money.
Get a cheapie, drive it for a year or two, see if you like it, they are not to everyone's taste.
Or even better, drive someone else's for a day or two, that may be enough to put you off.
 
You need to test drive one one you buy. You may find the newer dash claustrophobic.

You need to try the different engines.

You can get something decent for a lot less .

I couldn’t spend 30k on one and still struggle to understand how mines worth half decent money lol. I’d also struggle to sleep with a 30k one on the drive. Think I’d get an rs4 and a d2 instead if I had 30k lol
OP Don’t do it!! Absolute madness to do that. You must keep that pot. As mentioned, you may have a shock if you’ve never lived with one! I use one as a daily and have done a lot of mods - some quite expensive just to make comfortable. If your retiring, do a 300tdi build?
 
@Led Zeppelin , as others above have said, keep your rainy day savings money for precisely this...a rainy day, and your financial security.

If I may, it's not that £30k is a shed load for a D90, it's that life hits us all with curved ball rainy days when we least expect. It's life...c'est la vie! So one must have an emergency fund for when things go a little life wobbly.

Re' a Defender...do go out and test drive a few to find out which model you prefer, the one that suits you best. You may find you prefer an early Ninety or even a Series III. Now, if you're only working 26hrs a week this gives you a lot of time to invest into something else...could you invest your time into another activity that pays you more? Buy/sell products that make more money than your current 9-5? Do you have a skill that others are willing to pay for...? It's amazing how much some items can be bought for and then sold at a sensible profit. Even gardening for others will pay £15+/hr.

Re' Defender cost, there's a big range of 90's out there and, with careful viewing, a good one can be found for £10-£15k. But, there's always a but, our toy cars are just that...they're toys/unnecessary superfluous items that are not life necessary. Whatever you choose, good luck...but hold onto your £50k :)
