Hey Chaps,

After giving my Defender (2002 TD5 90) a good interior clean and a little playing around I thought id have a play around with the diff lock.

Ill be honest Ive never owned a Defender or a vehicle that has diff lock. So not totally sure if what I perceive as a problem is a problem though thought Id check.

Now to the point. I can engange low easy enough as well as High and neutral, however when I try to engange diff lock the diff lock light comes up on the dash but it doesnt lock into place (is it meant to?) a slight nudge or knock will move the lever back into high/low/N.

Is this normal or is it an issue?

Cheers
Josh

So the lever moves into place which is good. :)

Mine was a working 90 when i bought it so it moved in easy enough and engaged with a little "clunk" and the dash light was on.

If yours hasnt been used too often or in a while it maybe a little stiff.

So does the gear lever spring out of DL and the light stay on? You need to be a bit more descriptive mate. :)

it should not pop out or come disengsged. Has the vehicle had a gearbox swap recently???

If so you may find a few things:

a. The plastic bushes that are used to isolate the metal to metal contact are missing and the lever may feel a little sloppy (Not positive) this may not get enough throw to put it into difflock fully,

b. The pivot point on the gearbox needs to be unwound a couple of turns to get more throw depending on what linkage you have exactly.

If its popping out sort it before using it.

I dont plan on using it anytime soon so Ive got time to fix it if theres a major issue.

Ok ill try to explain again.

H -N - L - Clunks into place just like a gearbox should. As if you where changing gear normally.

When I move the diff lock lever left to activate it, the light on the dash comes on but theres no 'clunk' and a smal knock to the lever will push the diff lock lever back into N and the light turns off.

There is no solid clunk when moving the lever into diff lock mode.

Thing is I just bought the Landy and need to know if it is a major issue thats going to cost me money. As in going back to the seller and asking for it.

*Ginger - Ill get those pics done today for you.

Sounds normal to me.

No mate, no clunk. Easy test for you. Jack one wheel off the ground and gently try to drive with it out of lock, the wheel should turn.

Lock the diff and do ur again. This time super gentle. The car will try to move forward.

Do not put difflock with said wheel spinning even slowly. Stop select neutral and then select difflock and try and drive away.

Tested out the difflock today got stuck on a very muddy steep hill. Works fine :D

Though somehow managed to knock my tracking out a little!

Josh,

Sounds like your diff lock is working fine to me mate.

On a land rover thats used off road your tracking is never going to be perfect. i just do mine with a tape measure every so often to make sure its roughly straight.

Thought as much doesnt bother me at all to be honest. What they are meant for!

Heading out laning tomorrow for some more action.
