hi all,
today my 02 disco started behaving rather strangely... driving along next thing it was like chugga chugga then it was fine then same thing happened and was again fine as i came to a hill at 50mph she started dying so i pulled over switched it off and got it up me ar.e to start it took me 7/8/attempts i think it may be a fuel problem can someone please help.

Petrol or Diesel?

I'm gonna guess that it's a TD5 and that it has oil in the injector loom.;)
 
Sounds like a fuel delivery problem.

If you are lucky it's a blocked filter so about £10 and 5 mins, if you are unlucky it's a faulty fuel pump at they cost £130 to £200.

yes ratty its a TD5 but excuse my ignorance i know what an injectoe is but whats the loom?

The wiring that goes from the top of each of the injectors (under the rocker cover) is prone to having oil leak past the rubber gromet and then run down to the ecu. IF you pull the red plug off the ecu it will be covered in oil if this is the fault.;)
 
that reminds me, Ratty - yu heard from Buckshot? or got yo box back?

I was down by his around the beginning of the week. Unfortunately he was at his mates working on his landy.:doh::doh::doh:

He hasn't forgotten about yer leads.....Or my box.;)
 
heres where i am changed the fuel filter and im not gettin a delivery of fuel to the filter now have checked relays all seem fine no lights comin up on the dash though so is it the fuel pump.... normally i can hear the fuel flowin to the filter be4 ignition but no noise now?

It does sound like fuel pump. You need to check tere's a live feed to the pump before replacing it though. It could be a chaffed or corroded wire.

Just to be sure open driver door window, close all doors, reach through the window and turn ignition to pos II and listen at the rear offside arch.

If there is no sound, go to the boot, uplift the carpet and underlay to access a round panel. Removing the panel gives access to the top of the tank and the electrical connector for the pump. It is here that you could check the electrical supply to the pump.

Bear in mind that there is a gauze type filter in the base of the pump, sometimes these get clogged.

Do a search for" Discovery TD5 fuel pump" on Ebay - you'll find they are available from about £100 to £210.

HI dave/ratty... i checked the plug going to the fuel tank pump for current got 12/13 volts then checked the pins on the pump for continuity got nothin... took said pump from tank looks ok no broken wires etc... gauze was ok no dirt?? but when its still not running when i try to start her up the fuel filter is still bone dry... by the way i stuck a disco1 filter on because they had no D2 ones and the fact that me sedemeter is broke and they want 50 quid for a new one... it shouldn't make a difference?? so do you still think it could be the pump??

I think maybe you dropped a bôllock when you put a TDi fuel filter on your car instead of the TD5 one. The TD5 pumps from the tank and high pressure whereas the TDi sucks from the engine bay out of the tank at low pressure, so you might have collapsed the filter.

Also, a new TD5 sedimenter can be bought off Ebay for £15 upwards.

Try unplugging the fuel pump wires and apply positive and negative feeds direct to the pump itself (NOT THE CONNECTOR BLOCK). I went out to a disco 1 V8 a few weeks back that had a live feed on the top of the pump housing but had lost the feed on the underside. I ended up having to run the wires direct to the pump to temporarily get it going.
 
i have fitted a new pump not an original by the way... so i got lift off after the pump runs fine i can hear it then stops i turn her over and i can hear the pump still runnin in the cab(didnt hear that with the old one when it was working)... i drove it for 1 mile and the fuel filter is roasting hot.. i thought it would be hot but not that hot is this right? and the last thig is me fuel gauge on the dash aint working :mad: its a new pump dammit... any advice lads??

How much fuel have you got in yer landy? Unless the tank is about empty I rekon your fuel pipes are on arse backwards. It should take quite a long drive for your fuel filter to get hot. The fuel being returned from the engine to the tank is about 70 degs C. It sounds like your fuel return pipe is going to the fuel filter and the fuel feed is going down the fuel return pipe.

This extract is from rave.

The fuel supply system on New Discovery diesel derivative uses an electric two-stage pump. The pump is submerged in
the fuel tank. Fuel passes through the pump twice before it flows to the engine. In the first stage, the fuel is drawn
from the swirl pot and flows out of the fuel tank to the fuel filter (line A). The fuel filter is located on the outside
of the chassis on the right hand side of the vehicle, forward of the rear wheel. This fuel filter is of a canister design
and should be replaced at scheduled intervals, according to the service maintenance service sheet. Once the fuel has passed through the filter, it returns to the fuel tank (line where it enters the fuel pump for the second time. The fuel pump then boosts the pressure to 4.0 Bar. The boosted fuel pressure is controlled by a pressure relief valve located in the aluminium fuel connector block, which is situated on the rear of the cylinder head. The pressure relief valve controls the fuel pressure by regulating the amount of fuel returning to the fuel filter. The fuel connector block also retains an additional �fit for life� fuel filter. This filter should not be replaced under normal circumstances. However, if a blockage does occur, then the housing can be removed and the filter replaced.
