You can try this link, Blackbox Solutions make the best diagnostic kit for the L322

Not sure if gearbox selector can also cause this issue

It's the March 2015 issue of Landrover Owner International that you need, which you can download for android and iphone but i couldn't find a link to download to PC.

What's inside the March 2015 issue of Land Rover Owner | LRO.com UK

Am i allowed to post a scan of the write up on here or will i get sued ?

It looks like a really simple cheap fix which involves drilling a small hole again, removing the solenoid and lubricating it.

Edit - It's the same fix as the BBS but if the problem persists it goes into detail about how to remove the solenoid and lubricate it

Also a couple of links to similar issue below.
For some reason when i use the add link button, it duplicates the address

Hi guys not really at moment but I missed a call from them today but I did phone them this morning their reply was we have set the full afternoon aside to take a good look at it, but we are heading towards the column failure at moment..

So on that basis I started looking round for one in reperation

1, BBA reman don't rebuild them if the ignition lock fault is on it just movement motors
2, Main dealer column is complete and cost £3240 inc vat plus diagnostics and fitting circular of £4000 job all in...
3, my brother can get a bit discount on part alone gets it too £2650 inc vat
4, apparently 2007 onwards are different to early ones for some reason

5, second hand ones like rocky horse ****e and about £6/700 used

6, been offered £5000 scrap for it today spent £12000 on it 11 day ago ??

I should know a bit more tomorrow hopefully

One other landy dealer down south said to take it to main dealer only as they could possibly sort it without column as he mentioned the keys column and sync might of "locked it out " and shut down apparently but ive no idea but if I have to do that its going to be another £200 recovery to get it there before I start
..

its got my head in bits this so early on in ownership to be fair,,

Why dont you just get them to do the fix that i sent you information for, that would cost you about £5 plus labour if it works and is a common fault that gives your symptoms.

Show them the attached if it helps

Hi mate yes im going to print the information off for them and take it in unless they say some good news when I ring them in the morning its worth a try before I go any further with it...

Rob

Hope it works out for you, i wouldn't do anything in a rush, there are always l322's being broken on ebay if you need spares but i certainly wouldnt be thinking of scrapping yours.

They are specialist bits of kit and most normal garages don't even carry the diagnostic kit to talk to them let alone know all the quirks to fix them

I know when i put my key in the ignition before i even try and turn it, it fires the steering lock solenoid. i don't think you even need to put the key in the ignition as there is a signal sent from the key fob to a receiver by the ignition lock i believe

A bit of light reading from Rave manual

Immobilisation System
When the vehicle is unlocked, with the driver's door lock or the remote handset, the BCU outputs a 'vehicle unlocked'
message on the K bus. The K bus message wakes the immobilisation ECU which energises the transponder coil
around the ignition switch. When the ignition key is close to, or inserted into, the ignition switch, the immobilisation
ECU reads the identity of the transponder. If the transponder/ignition key is valid, the immobilisation ECU outputs a
'valid key in ignition lock' message on the K bus.
When it detects the valid key in ignition lock message, the steering lock ECU disengages the steering column lock.
After disengaging the steering lock, provided it is also receiving a Park/Neutral signal from the Electronic Automatic
Transmission (EAT) ECU, the steering lock ECU sends a release signal to the immobilisation ECU. When the ignition
switch is turned from position 0 to position I, the immobilisation ECU interrogates the transponder for the password
and rolling code. If these are correct the immobilisation ECU sends the coded release signal to the ECM and, when
the ignition switch turns to position III, energises the starter solenoid to crank the engine. The immobilisation ECU also
writes a new rolling code to the transponder and verifies it to ensure it has been correctly received.
On petrol models, the immobilisation ECU energises the starter solenoid via the starter motor relay. The starter motor
relay is controlled by the ECM to provide the comfort starting function, which allows the engine to be started by a
momentary crank (position III) selection on the ignition switch. When the ignition switch turns to position III, the ECM
energises the starter motor relay, which energises the starter solenoid, until engine speed exceeds approximately 500
rev/min, or for 20 seconds, whichever occurs first.
If the vehicle is unlocked and the ignition key is not put into the ignition switch, the immobilisation ECU de-energises
the transponder coil and goes back into the sleep mode after approximately 60 seconds. When the ignition key is
subsequently put into the ignition switch and turned through 10° to 20°, the steering lock senses the movement and
sends a 'request electronic vehicle immobiliser status' message on the K bus. The message wakes the immobilisation
ECU, which energises the transponder coil and commences the transponder/ignition key identification and engine
mobilisation process as detailed above.

I know we all love to slag off Britpart - but that's a really helpful tip! Good on 'em.

Its only sponsored by britpart, its the landrover owner international magazine that runs the same sort of feature every month and other how to's which also carry the britpart logo at the top.

Dont forget this link if you are printing info off.

L322 Steering Column

if you are keeping the car then as others have already posted, diagnostics are a must, you could always email Storey at RSW to see if he has any advice and the allcomms is a great bit of kit for the L322

Hang in there!

The fix looks straightforward, even I think I could do it!

If it is any comfort, my P38 had a gearbox fault which the guys on the board here insist was a broken signal cable .... ended up costing me USD 1,000 for a box overhaul.

Cheers.

Hi guys its on its way to getting sorted rightly or wrongly one way or the other so this is what happened..

Upon further Diagnostics the dash was stripped to get to the column and where the solenoid mounts in column was tapped with light hammer and a click was heard and key then tried in and hey presto the key turned and RR started up this was tried 5/6 times and was fine..

On removal of the key it was noticed the steering lock did not re engage after another light tapping session it would not re engage the column lock, to be fair I wasn't bothered as it was sort of stuck out in unlocked position still started fine mind..but it was explained it could reengage at anytime when the key was removed today tomorrow next week next year who knows, and might or might not jam again ??

I was going to do the drill the pilot hole mod but after quite a bit reading it seems very hitty missy if it works at all and if it lasts and could basically happen again at anytime not the best of thoughts every time you go out in the car wondering if it will start every time you get back in it.

So ive since spoke to my brother whom works in a Bmw main dealer whom is part of a group which have a hand rover branch, ive ordered a brand new complete column as early model used columns aint interchangeable with the later 2007 models apparently but I cant be doing with will it start wont it start gamble so ive bit the bullet but got a bit discount from the retail price of £3260 inc vat down to £2100 inc so a decent saving there.

I tried BBA reman and they don't do rebuilds on the lock side just the movement side of the columns.
Used columns available but non I could find for 2007 on years and prices around £7/800 used and no warranty or nothing with those so that could be a bit of a gamble..

So new column has arrived today and being fitted today/tomorrow so hopefully all sorted next few days all be it not a cheap job but hopefully peace of mind it wont break down any day soon from that at least.....

Fair play, being a newer model you can justify spending a bit more on it whereas £2000 would be more than a third of the total value of mine. Mine is only a toy also so if it breaks down for a bit i just park it up and fix it myself when i get chance.
Hopefully you are all sorted for now.............:)

Bloody hell a £2,100 plus labour bill for a sticky solenoid:eek: Total madness:mad:

It's a result of sorts Rob so I suppose that spend saves you hating your £12k investment. Hopefully that will be the end and then you can start getting faith back in it and enjoying ownership. Took me a few weeks after all the cack mine threw at me but you'll get there :)

Scott

Well going by what you were saying, you should at least be able to sell the slightly dodgy old one to recoup some of your loss...?

The millisecond anyone starts confusing "investment" with "expense" it all starts going horribly wrong.

Hi Guys just an update to be fair and I totally understand that some of you will disagree with whats been done and why etc, but its done for peace of mind more than anything as the girlfriend and kids will be using sometimes etc..

Ok...

Brand spanking new complete column fitted supplied by main dealer fitted by independent all working coded in and everything working as it should be now, the retail on the column inc vat was £3260 which was madness..

It ended up costing me £2100 hopefully I might get something back on my old unit as it works just the steering lock was jammed out after the breakdown but like you said on here im sure it could be pilot hole drilled lubed and all might be well, I just needed the peace of mind and basically it sorted quick before I did something drastic and blew my brains out with it hah ha...

So ive got a few goodies to add to her now she is back few bits to make her mine type thing nothing tacky though I hate tacky ..

So hopefully for now the RR will cut me a bit slack and behave after the big bill owned two weeks and spent a fortune..

That's range rover ownership for you....
