Hi all
Bit of help needed please

I am looking for a mk 1 or mk2 disco, what do I need to look for before I buy one please?

I think I have picked up the following faults to check for, what else?

Mk1
Rot in sill boot floor, and inner wings?
Clutch arm failure
???

Mk2 TD5
warning lights,
???

What else do I need to look for please?

Anyone know of anything for sale, I am in the Norwich area?

RUST, RUST, RUST, RUST..... RUST, RUST, RUST, RUST..... RUST, RUST, RUST, RUST..... RUST, RUST, RUST, RUST.....

(In a slightly higher pitch each verse...)

AND MORE RUST , sealbelt mounts , rear door hinge ,
and any place there is metal there may well be rust
also when last had cam belt and or water'pump
, check sun roofs for leaks ,

Take someone who is familiar with either RRC, D1 & D2 or look for a disco with a low mileage and none of the above issues, if the owner is willing to sell that is :)

i fink now adays a rust free 200 tdi or 300 tdi is a thing of the past , ive also heard some of the early d2,s are starting suffering with tin worm so i think a large budget or a decent welder is in order

I've got both of the remaining two rust free 300tdi's in britain so HA! :D

One of 3 then :p

But mines not even got surface rust on it :D:D:D

Mine has no rust. I know this as I spent a month welding, grinding and going at it like a man possessed with a wire brush. Technicaly it can't be the same disco it's a bit like triggers brush that has had 4 new handles and 3 new heads.

Disco I - main problem is rust all over in the body, chassis usually ok;

Disco II - the exact opposite.

Take a ring spanner and take aux belt off ( 30 seconds ) and check there is no play in the crank pulley.

From experience the mileage thing can be overrated, its the combination of mileage versus service history, not just the service stamps but was it loved with faults fixed promptly.

..mine was cheapest on Autotrader and came with a high mileage... but every thing was done and documented, it so far hasn't had any major failure(touch wood) and is just a pleasure to drive, but its a disco so only a mater of time, but two years so far so good.

I have read on here about peps paying top money, for low mileage full stamped service book and within a few days/weeks finding they have a crock of poo.....even the warning lights with the bulbs removed, so watch they all come on during the start test. helps to know which ones should be there. But like any car buying thing these days its a lottery.
