Hello, cant get the driveshaft nut to undo on my 99 Freelander, drivers side front nut. it won't budge, have broken a half'inch breaker bar this morning, snaped the end clean off, nut hasn't moved. i'm turning it anti-clockwise, its tight as, hasn't moved at all, not even a 100000000000000 of a turn, its like its welded on..

assuming you can't see any of the threads..... no

if you can see the treads have a look at them!

its most likely that you will need an impact gun to undo them as they are normally done up FT

No they are not LH thread.

make sure you have cleared out the bit thats staked down clear of threads then i used an impact socket, breaker bar which was slid inside a 4 foot long piece of steel box section and pulled on it for leverage. It will give all of a sudden.

Before you do though - make sure you have a new hub nut and a torque wrench that will allow you to retighten to the correct setting!

And that is one mother of a torque wrench as well so consider if it would be cheaper to get the garage involved.

This is the way I do it,but you'll need a x wheel brace and a socket set extension bar with a hex head on the bar end. You'll also need a good 3 foot+ heavy tube.

Jack the vehicle up a bit and loosen the wheel nuts a bit.Remove the hub cap.Get your 32mm socket onto the extension bar then the wheel brace and tube. Before you do that tap a punch into the keyhole to open the stake nut.Turn the nut anticlockwise.
I hope that helps someone, its really easy with the right tools.I bought an impact drill to do the job the first time I had to remove the hub, what a waste of money.Luckily I bought a good 1/2"britool socket set at the same time, the best €140 or more I ever spent.

Usually you would need a 3/4 inch breaker bar and socket, but if you dont, a well fitting socket, and as long a breaker bar as you have. I`ve found that rocking on the nut left and then right tends to free them up or maybe a jerking motion 1st in one direction then the other, sometimes tightening it up a little frees it too.... I did this on my rear pinion nut and it freed itself.

It was as a last resort mind as it was starting to pee me off.......:D

That the trouble, you're looking at an inch drive set and thats a big outlay for very occational use.

you will struggle with half inch sockets, nut is far tighter than half inch is designed for.

i have never failed to undo a hubnut with a 1/2" drive socket!
and i have had the hubs off everything from small cars to large vans!

Just keep at it mate, It took me 2 days to get a VW golf hub nut off once, day 1 spent ****ing about with wrong tools, day 2 got propper fitting 12 point socket, and a longer 1/2 inch breaker bar, and refreshed after a good nights sleep had the extra energy needed and it came off easy.

I snapped the end off my dads snap-on 1/2 breaker bar, it was about 3foot long. I rang the local garage up and they said exactly the same as a few on here, too tight for 1/2 gear.

I went to halfords with the intention of buying a 3/4 sliding T bar and socket, came out with a ful 3/4 set. It cost about £80, half price, I noticed last weekend they have big tool sales on again, it could well be on offer again. It hasn't failed to remove any nut I have tried to remove since I bought it, well worth the money.

i took the center out and used a center punch like old irish and left the wheel on the ground i used a 3/4 inch bar and a half inch adapter to the socket i had which was flat sided not a mulity sided one as these tend to slip then had the wife on the foot brake and bingo but they are 295lbs torque and you "should" have a new nut to put back on

I spent 3 hours bendig half inch bars and splitting half inch sockets. Marina owner came past and asked what I was doing. He lent me a 3/4" socket set. 5 mins job done. The drive shafts from Rimmers were great. My only complaint was having to buy another socket as the new nuts were a different size. Small price I think!
