Spent all day removing leaking fuel tank on my Defender - nightmare job! Got it out by destroying both rear and front brackets and giving it a kick! Have fitted new rear and front brackets but can't re-position new tank and appears not to "go"' although size is correct. Can anyone please give me some advice on how to re-fit the new fuel tank i.e. what is the order of positioning, front first, back first, twist this way, that way etc. Any advice much appreciated. Thanks.

I have been trough this and empathise with you. kick it some more and jiggle it loads - it will fit in.

As I recall there was no rhyme or reason - just kick it

Thanks for that. Is a tap with a hammer to "bend" the metal a definite no no do you think a steady pressure from the heel of a foot should be all it needs? Thanks again.

It's a landrover, do what you need to do to get it to fit, hammers are the norm not the exception. :D just don't hole the tank!!

Mine needed adjusting, with a highly calibrated lump lead shot plastic mallet .

although I was trying to fit a 300 tdi under drivers seat tank into a vehicle fitted with a Td5 body, seemed to make it more interesting from what I could tell.

Cheers

Thanks everyone - we managed to get it done today (2 man job). We took off the scills and brackets that hold them and the tank actually went into place quite well in the end without too much force. Thanks again for the great advice.
