whining!!!!!
good day gents,we read alot of threads including whining...a whining front diff,a whining t/box,a whining rear diff,whining output shaft (dunno how and wht the hell will that be),how can a person identify whines?how can it be pin pointed,i mean for example how can a p38 driver know if it is the front diff whining or t/box whining?
and how to identify a diff noise?is it dubdubdubdub,or weeeeeeeeeee when driving near walls?
and how to identify t/box whining?
i swear that i am not being sarcastic or anything,but just i come over threads with gents mentioning whines and stuff and they seem to be sure that they found it,then they get shocked and more confused by a different diagnostic in the forum (good intentions and helpful thoughts from everyone,no doubt in that).
can someone explain these whines and diagnostics,and how to identify them?

but seriously.. you can tell something about whining noises by what conditions the car is under when it happens, eg power on, overrun, coasting etc and you can sometimes hear whether its coming from the front or back of the car.
a lot of it is guess work though

grindy types are usually wheel bearings.

what pitch is the whine in question

+1 gav grinding is the easiest to pin point.
u have whines that u hear when ur windows are closed,then disappear when ur windows are open,and when driving near walls u sometimes hear weeeeeeeeeeeee,close the windows and u hear woooooooooooooo,ingage low ratio and u hear zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.combine them together on a trip,and hell we will transform into mongoloids (with all respects toward mongoloids) sticking our head outside the car,under the steering wheel,over the driver seat (to hear if it is from the back),under the seat.damn it.
my point is :
1.diff whining symptoms are (give examples) describe
2.t/box whining symotms are (give examples) describe
3.i even heard abt cv joints whining (thought they will make crack crack crack when turning if they are due)
4.output shaft bearing (or whatever this is)
and so on
