hiya
when i removed my inlet manifold i uses my karcher to remove as much rubbish before hand , got a large storage container, filled it up with hot water, sprayed oven cleaner inside all the ports then submerged the inlet manifold into the container and left it overnight,
on removing it the next day used the karcher again and couldnt believe how much junk came out, also when i done the egr blanking that made a difference as well,
if i may say check the small vacuum pipes when u remove the inlet manifold for splits or holes etc as i found two small splits which causes the engine to tick over rough.
i assume youve done the crankcase breather mod and the turbo filter that sits at the back of the engine
if u look in the haynes manual the torque settings will be in there or look on the web site

ur very welcome, also i used a thin brush
i use to be a boiler engineer and used brushes that i use to clean heat exchanger out with, as they are quiet long and u can buy a set of them for about a tenner, they are good for getting the crud out of awkward spaces
some people on here have used, engine cleaner, mr muscle, oven cleaner etc , small wire brush attachments for a drill to get at the entry points but i personally didn't as its aluminium i was a bit worried of doing any damage
did find the engine responded alot better doing the egr blanking also the hose that goes onto the egr i cleaned alot of crude out of that to,
may i ask have u checked out the rover ron web site out, as on there is the extra mods that are worth doing including the synergy, as i fitted a synergy box and transformed the engine and so many people really like them
surprising what a good service does as well , air filter, gearbox, ird, rear diff etc, as i got my son to do all of this for me including doing the oil in the auto box and couldn't believe doing the routine bits , of how much nicer it changes gear etc.
hope this doesn't come across in trying to tell u how to suck eggs etc and hope it may be of some use to you , plus i found out the hard way in not checking the vacuum pipes as they are considerably easier to get to when the manifold is off, can but a roll of it from halfords as mine had burnt through and always like to share as so many others do of the little tips that hopefully prevent nightmares further down the road

Thanks Gary I will have a go at the ports gently with a brush and some brake/clutch cleaner I think. The manifold I am going to do with a product called G101 and a bottle brush which I usually clean my alloys with but have used it on all sorts of really grimey stuff with great results. I am changing all my hoses for silicone ones at the same time so should be good there. Mine is a manual gearbox version and I have just had it re-mapped which has given it a new lease of life..... Lots more power :0)

ive still got to replace my hoses and will do the same in replacing them with silicone ones, have u also seen the t bolt clamps that are supposed to be alot better than the basic jubilee clips etc

including exchanging the maf sensor which changed the mpg from around 20 mpg to around 35 mpg,

That's the stuff Gary and a good price too. I use it in a spray bottle neat..... But u can dilute and use to remove bugs and tar off paintwork. I use it for all sorts.... Even cleaning my shower room!!!!

im running the bosch maf, mines a td4 , 3 door auto,
down the motorway will go up to around 38 mpg which im very happy about, seeing its an auto as well in using more than a manual,
one day will go over to a pierburgh but is running alot better from it doing previously 20 mpg , so going to leave it as it is as im not sure i would get much more mpg out of it
thats with the synergy set on number 2 and dont have a heavy right foot, but wish to update it as ive got the older one where u have to turn the engine off to activate the new settings , where i know the newer synergys can be done whilst still driving, got the older 3 way toggle switch set on red which i also believe is the opposite setting of the new synergy and i think that gives the best mpg , famous last words , lol
once i get it upgraded wish to also buy a 2 way switch and use an existing oem switch so can incorporate it better into the dashboard

on the td4 they are normally fitted with a bosch maf,
when u fit a synergy box i believe the pierburgh has a better design etc over the bosch one and also im under the impression that if u had a bosch maf fitted u wouldn't be able to just for a pierburgh maf without first having the synergy box
also with the synergy box u have can adjust the settings to increase etc the torque and power in stages, has a built in maf compensator that can be turned on and off and also gets rid of the flat spots lower down
it personally transformed my freelander and feels like a new car, i fitted the oem cruise control to mine and setting it on around 65 to 70 returns around 38 mpg, is very smooth, quiet etc,
may sound complicated but so many people swear by these synergy boxes and also the back up service is second to none, had mine 3 years now and wouldn't be without it now , the fitting was extremely easy and came with very good installation instructions
