is there a way to see if the HG is actually failing, apart from coolant loss and obvious oil/water mix residue

reason I ask is I am loosing coolant however iv found a patch under the car (not sourced it yet), but want to check HG is fine before it goes in a big way.

if it is leaking then the water pump is knackered which if not replaced will go on to damage the headgasket. You could take the car to a garage and get a pressure test and/or a sniff test to make sure its ok

also when it is running put your hand at the end of the tail pipe but not to close and it will be hot steam coming out and you will feel it but this does not always happen I have known it

cheers guys, im guna take the under guard thing off and have a proper nosey round this week to try and fine where the hell its coming from..ta

If your k series is losing water after being driven and dumping it on the drive, then a good thing to check is the inlet manifold. These are reasonably common for leaking, they work fine when hot and driving, but as they go cold they let water seep out down the back of the head.

check for staining on the back of the engine.

A combustion leak test works great. If you check youtube, you will see how to perform one. Buying the tester is not that expensive ($50) on this side of the Atlantic.
