Building my own roof rack tomorow, but a bolt in one rather than a clamp on style, because I can't really get my head around how to build the clamp and I'd feel safer with it bolted in.
I want to have 3 supports to the gutter on each side (plate bent to fit into gutter with bolt holes) 1 on the front, middle and rear above the rear side window,
But there doesn't seem to be enough room to get a bolt through there?

How do people bolt them in there? Or do I need to make a plate to span the whole length of the gutter , bolt it where i can and weld the support to that?

i welded a m10 threaded bar 90 degrees to a piece of angle an the welder a tube the same inner size as the bar to the up rite
sorry cant upload photos

I have built a few expedition racks and have bolted them onto the rail - 4 each side, and not found any issue with them moving. I just used some 90 degree angle to bolt onto the rack.

Plenty of examples on the web....

Might be easier than welding to the roof?
