I bought this 1985 90 a couple of months ago, in the knowledge it needed a few jobs doing. There was a fist sized hole rusted through the driver's footwell, which I've repaired - see photo. I got £500 knocked off the purchase price for this, now I know how much work is involved fixing it, I should probably pushed for more. The next job was curing a diff oil leaking out onto the right hand rear wheel. Having fitted a new inner oil seal, and done some online reading, I actually think the leak was caused by a corroded and blocked axle breather. Anyway, whilst doing this job, I found quite a bit of rust in the rear crossmember behind the right hand wheel, see photo. I don't have time to fix this before the MOT is due, does anyone know if this rust would be an MOT failure?

Clean it up a coat it, an afternoons work, don't look that bad to me, what's it like from the back.

Keeping in mind you have a towball I would think a genuine cautious tester would fail it as its got a hole so close to the tow mounts. But I suspect most would pass it.

All looks solid from the back, the outside vertical steel is fine but the inside vertical steel is holed and the horizontal piece is completely rotten. A couple of closer photos that show it better.

Bodge it and get another year out of it, then in that year buy a new galv weld on xmember and make plans to fit it early next year.
No hard job diy take your time days work.

Like others suggest, I'd clean it up, give it a little paint so it's not obviously corroding and hope for the best come MOT day.

If you weld and can make access work, try filling in the holes. If it's not holed, an MOT tester shouldn't fail it.

If you're seriously concerned, you could unbolt the towbar too, as it should then need to be sufficiently rotten to affect the structural integrity of the vehicle, which looks unlikely.
