yeah was going to say.. even with a lift and transmission jack.. i'd be quoting like 3 hours also.. i got the vibe from the guy that he didn't want to do it as a aftermarket part as he wont make money on it..

got another quote today for 3-4 hours labour.. they're happy to do it.

Thats more like it. :):)

Quick question/near subject:)

Do any of you disconnect the battery before replacing clutch or gearbox?

Had clutch done by garage in past and they didn't. Now its in garage for gearbox and they want to disconnect it

300tdi Defender

Paid for 8 hours labour for the clutch renewal

Yup always.

Yes pal 3 hours is plenty time to do it, im a grease monkey to trade so I can swing on spanners all day long. :)
Aha, (crap band) that would be helpful.
Would you charge 3 hours though?
At the end of the day hourly rate would also need to be taken into consideration when comparing hrs quoted.

If it takes 3 hours id charge 3 hours, I ran a big garage 15 years ago & they were pushing for overcharging hours
pushing the lads to earn bonuses for extra sales when clearly not needed.:mad: I left the job which I loved & was with
them for 20 years as I didnt like what they were doing so I moved onto working on boats.

If I ran into any problems lets say a snapped bolt, call the customer & take pics then explain whats involved
to rectify the issues and the costs, people are fine if your honest. 8 hours is a joke for that job.
Here's what I'll do tomorrow I'll call my mate who owns a landy repair garage & ask what he charges.
I'll ask my other mate who used to work on landys day in day out he was here tonight messing about with my
landy I think he was robbing bits off it for his lol

We are quite lucky in the fact our local garage, when we need one, will adjust the qoute down if the job takes less time.

It took me longer than that to do mine although i've been repainting bits and renewing and futtering about ...
I also discovered that my flywheel had a 17thou channel in it which needed to be smoothed out.

And then the gearbox needed a clean up prior to refuitting ...

And I need a new handbrake cable and the shoes were a bit worn/oily ...

Saying that @Tirran and I changed his clutch (200tdi - LT77) by removing and replacing the engine in around 6 hours, but that didn't include refitting the floors and carpets etc etc.

If time is a constraint then spend the £600 and get someone else to do it.
If you want to look at everything and have the time, it's not that difficult/complex a job.

And ... they are heavy items (transfer and gear boxes) so it's really a 2 man job ...
Some B’stard has graffitied your clutch, no wonder it was cheap😂
