I have my MOT in a couple of weeks but my horns do not work, there was a radio fitted before I brought it, so I am hoping it's that.
If the rotary switch has gone would the airbag still work?
I have also purchased a new stereo wires/plug it did say it's for a Freelander 1 so I am also hoping this will fix the problem.
Horns do work, as these have been tested.
I know there are loads of threads on here on this subject but there is no real solution posted on here, so is there??
Any ideas please.

Firstly your radio should not be in any way connected to your horns ;) except via an earth which I think you'll find may be the real problem something is earthing where it shouldn't ;)

Secondly if you cant find where the dodgy earth is................

air bag will work if light isnt on ,rotary coupler which is a common thing to go is just a long tape of wires in a roll ,sometimes they all break so all functions are lost sometimes just 1 or 2 so only them functions ,all the wires can be tested by using a continuity tester either side of unit except yellow air bag ones that short across when unplugged
 
Changing the rotary coupler isn't a hard job with a Haynes manual. Did this on our TD4 in March and the longest bit of the job was waiting for airbag capacitors to doze off after disconnecting battery.

the horns are connect to the radio via a earth so if you dont get it connected right the radio will work but not the horns its all goes through the rotary coupling on steering wheel
look at the wiring diagram i had exactly the same thing nightmare to get it right
 
Sorry for resurrecting an old thread, thought it was better than starting a new one for what seems to be a similar problem.

I just bought a 2002 TD4. I have similar issue, horn buttons on steering wheel don't work but horn is working if I attempt to lock car with one door open.

I've noticed a few threads where people ask if the radio was changed and mention a common earth for the radio/horn buttons. The previous owner changed the radio to a Sony Radio/CD, I reckon I'll have to take out the radio because there seems to be a loose speaker connection. So I'm wondering if anyone can advise me if there is anything to check on the radio connections while I have the radio out. Are the wiring diagrams available online or should I just go get the Haynes manual?

If it's related to radio wiring I don't mind looking at it, otherwise I'm tempted to leave it to the dealer I bought from to repair, I have a 3 month warranty, and I believe that under Irish law he can't sell me a car without a working horn as it's part of the MOT (NCT in Ireland) test.
