....down.

Went away on Wednesday for a few days at our holiday home in Yarmouth, RR driving great when, suddenly, ABS, TC and air suspension warning lights came on followed by loss of rev counter and speedo.
Then everything went haywire, gear box fault, engine fault and warning buzzers and finally engine cut out.
Luckily there was a small slip road at exactly that point because as I just managed to pull into it a HGV came hurtling past.

RAC duly called out and both alternator and battery dead.
Ended being taken to a recommended garage in Yarmouth where the next day I paid £480 for replacement items including new alternator belt.

And now.... Bloody thing turning over slow when cold but does get going, but switch off when warmed up and it doesn't start unless I use the battery pack.
Battery showing 11.8 volts and alternator pushing 13.4 volts so I know it should be OK but at a loss as to why it won't start once warmed up?

Me on Weds....

Check all the battery/ alternator cable connections, could be loose. Put a jump lead from the negative post on the battery to the engine, see if it improves. If it does then check your earth straps.:)

Had no choice, was on holiday and only place that had parts immediately was Halfrauds.

Prices were £224 for alternator, £97 for battery, £22 for belt and £60 labour. Add the dreaded VAT and there it is.

hope you kept the alternator. bet it was a diode pack.. cost no more than about £20. then you can return the halfords one

13.4 volts is not a lot of good, should be an absolute minimum of 13.8 but 14.2 to 14.5 volts is normal except for some early cars. Petrol or diesel? Battery may be too small.

Sorry to hear about that Rob. :( I'm not so sure about trusting that Halfrauds would supply the necessary. I just got a 'remanufactured oem' alternator from Craddocks - 105 amp -185 quid plus vat. 14.7 at the battery. But you have to have a big battery too - the 130amp hr one from Alphaline I think is about 96 quid delivered (overnight). Hope you get it sorted. ;)

Maybe that was tickover rather than 2000 rpm?

Petrol. Have spoken to the garage in Yarmouth and they are more than happy to refund what I paid for the battery as it's deffo too small.
Have bought this - Hankook Car Battery / Hankook Batteries / Batteries by Application

Thanks.
This is the alternator that they supplied - Delco Remy Alternator DRB4360 DB5470 ERR5834 | eBay

It was, will check again.

Hmmm, not good. Just checked at 2K rpm and it's only 13.0 volts. :(
Either there is a bad connection from alternator to battery, or the earth strap from engine to chassis, chassis to battery.
Failing that, your new alternator is fecked.

Could be alternator as it's now showing 13.47 at 2K.

Battery is showing 12.57 volts when swtched off.

Battery voltage is OK ish. Still need to check all connections or put the meter direct on the alternator and see what you get.
