Yes thanks Nodge68. There are no mix and match tyres. Goodyear Wranglers all round. Does it really matter how many years/ miles I have covered??? Should help only be restricted to the saintly? Some of us live on a budget that means if it ain't broke then don't fix it. Just because you service your car doesn't make you the arbiter of standards. In my short experience of this site I would think most people give advice freely, but if you think I don't deserve any help then fair enough. I really do respect your point. I will never understand it, but I do respect it. Sometimes it's rewarding just to help someone for the sake of it. Deserving doesn't/shouldn't come into it.
You caught me on a bad day for which I apologise. I'm normally helpful
I understand that you may be running your Freelander on a budget, but skipping services really is false economy. Here's why.
Every skipped service will depreciate the vehicle's value by much more than the cost of a DIY service. So basically instead of your Freelander with its low mileage still be worth a reasonable amount of money, by not doing routine, annual maintenance, the value of your Freelander will now be much lower than it should have been.
Even if you aren't bothered about retained values, good and regular maintenance helps reduce the chance of problems down the line. Your TD4 engine is a complex and fussy unit that needs fresh oil annually. If this is skipped, then the turbo is at a very real risk of bearing failure.
Most service jobs are easy to do on a DIY basis and so cost no more that £100 annually, using quality parts and oils.
So servicing is a vital part of vehicle ownership and should always be factored into the cost.
Bear in mind that a vehicle is much less likely to be break down and therefore be available to use as and when needed, if it's looked after. Take your hitting the starter as an example. It's telling you that it needs a rebuild and putting it off will only leave you stranded when hitting it no longer works.
You said you loved your Freelander, but avoiding simple maintenance, kinda shows you don't. ;)

I know, I actually do feel awful about it. But it has basically boiled down to a night out with girls with massive knockers or service the car. I genuinely do feel like a wrong 'un. I consider this site my rehab.
This type of comment is exactly the kind of thing we like around here, and as far as I'm concerned the only acceptable reason for missing services.
Consider yourself accepted in the community. :p

FFS Chill!

As far as I can tell, you've upset 1 person on this thread - so why this flack! Hang around and get to know the forum a little - then its acceptable to slag people off - well its still not on a technical forum - but you know what I mean.

TBH mate, I can see his point - if you don't do the basics of looking after your car, then this forum may not be the place for you. Do not pull the "I'm broke" card - cos I'm sure your 2006 car's been taxed, insured and obviously fueled for 8 years - finding a little extra (even if its every couple of years) for some filters and oil isn't going to make much difference. We don't do this to get people who don't give a **** out of trouble. If you're thinking its time to start putting a bit of thought into the motor - then hang around, I'm sure you'll appreciate it.

Thanks Grumpy, I do owe folk an apology. I had just had a bad day and I'm in general a totally moany arse. It has been taxed and insured but I do struggle with fuel. Hence only 14k since I bought it in 2008. I am not totally skint so fair play to you but I love my car and as I say, It's only in the last 6 months things have been going wrong. I actually do feel an emotional connection/pride to this car so I am gonna try and do my best from now on. Once again I am so very sorry for being a trumpet. Sometimes being a Glaswegian makes you a little bit De Nero in Taxi Driver. Sorry again

Nodge68, I am so very sorry, you caught me on a really bad day too. Although there was no excuse for my mad rant. You are totally correct in what I should be doing and if a randommer asked me these things I would tell them exactly the same as you told me. All I have done to the brief is kept the oil topped up and the proper tyres on. Thanks to you guys I have seen the error of my ways. I will deal with the problems cos I've had enough time to stew in my own juices and realise I was being an arsebiscuit. Thanks again so much. Very, very sorry again. Jesus, this is like rehab. Take care mate. All the very best to you.

We all have off days ;)
Stick about, you'll learn plenty and will save tons of cash by learning to do simple stuff yourself;)

OK Class - glad that we're all settled down - there will be repercussions though - detention after school on Wednesday for Nodge and Roberts.

So lets get back to studying....
Yeah noise only happens when moving. As you suggested I revved up to around 4000 whilst stationary and it seemed ok. When tested it does occur when coasting down from speed(in gear, clutch pressed and neutral). Any ideas?
Have you managed to find out more about where this whine is coming from?

The only thing on the engine this could be (I think) is the crank shaft pulley - that's the pulley on the end of the engine that turns the belt(s) (the belt that then turns the bits that bolt onto the engine like the alternator etc). This has a rubber damper which degrades and the first signs are noises at different rev ranges. Sometimes it only makes the noise when under power. From your description above it definitely does NOT sound like this as it sounds like the noise is there when you coast down with the car in neutral - so then engine will be at 'idle'. But if I'm wrong on that idle bit, then just shine a light on the pulley with the engine running at idle and see if there's any shiney flecks of metal floating around it - if there are it needs replacing.

From the description it does sound like the noise is somewhere in the transmission. The description of just "a whine at 1800 rpm" isn't really helping identify it. As said before, it could be lots of different things. It would be nice to know in what general area it is coming from. Be careful in working this out, because noises can carry through the chassis of the car and appear to come from somewhere else - so often its a best guess situation - but it would be good to have some idea.

At the moment I'm thinking it could be those brackety thingies VCU support bearings - but that's a long shot at the mo and you definitely wouldn't want to be spending cash on that guess.

Thanks v. much chaps. I am in contact with a chap at a breakers yard in Glasgow who will supply and fit a re-conditioned Starter motor for £80 quid and have a listen to my whining problem to see what he can do. I#ll let you know how I get on. Cheers.

If you near Glasgow then give Disco Mikey a shout. He's good on everything Land Rover and will come to you ;)

Cheers Nodge68. I didn't go with the breakers yard guy. I found starter motor/alternator/battery specialists in Bellshill, Lanarkshire that were absolutely great. Their workshop looks like a f-ing tip but they sorted my starter motor out for £70 quid all in. Total respect to Shandon Electrical in Bellshill. I was not paid for the shout out but they were really, really, good. look like mole people but they know what they're doing. Again thanks to nodge68. My next problem to be tackled will be the whining above 1800 revs. I will gently approach Disco Mikey shortly for advice. Although I just realised that makes me sound like some kind of groomer. lol. I'm not honest!!! Or am I??? grrrr

Glad your starter is sorted. Give Disco Mikey a PM. He takes ages to reply as he spends much time working on Landies, mostly Discoverys. He knows his stuff and will come to you.

Cheers again mate. Will do. Sorry I took so long to reply but with the Scottish Cup final and Champions League, I have spent the past few weeks upside down in a urinal eating lemon cakes. Take care
