You caught me on a bad day for which I apologise. I'm normally helpfulYes thanks Nodge68. There are no mix and match tyres. Goodyear Wranglers all round. Does it really matter how many years/ miles I have covered??? Should help only be restricted to the saintly? Some of us live on a budget that means if it ain't broke then don't fix it. Just because you service your car doesn't make you the arbiter of standards. In my short experience of this site I would think most people give advice freely, but if you think I don't deserve any help then fair enough. I really do respect your point. I will never understand it, but I do respect it. Sometimes it's rewarding just to help someone for the sake of it. Deserving doesn't/shouldn't come into it.
I understand that you may be running your Freelander on a budget, but skipping services really is false economy. Here's why.
Every skipped service will depreciate the vehicle's value by much more than the cost of a DIY service. So basically instead of your Freelander with its low mileage still be worth a reasonable amount of money, by not doing routine, annual maintenance, the value of your Freelander will now be much lower than it should have been.
Even if you aren't bothered about retained values, good and regular maintenance helps reduce the chance of problems down the line. Your TD4 engine is a complex and fussy unit that needs fresh oil annually. If this is skipped, then the turbo is at a very real risk of bearing failure.
Most service jobs are easy to do on a DIY basis and so cost no more that £100 annually, using quality parts and oils.
So servicing is a vital part of vehicle ownership and should always be factored into the cost.
Bear in mind that a vehicle is much less likely to be break down and therefore be available to use as and when needed, if it's looked after. Take your hitting the starter as an example. It's telling you that it needs a rebuild and putting it off will only leave you stranded when hitting it no longer works.
You said you loved your Freelander, but avoiding simple maintenance, kinda shows you don't.
