Hi Folks. Sorry for jumping straight in with a question but I don't want to risk damage.

I have a 2006 Freelander TD4 with around 40k on the clock. In the last week I've noticed that as soon as I get above 1800 revs, particularly in 4th and 5th gear, there is a high pitched whining noise from the car. Is this something to do with the turbo? Is it safe to drive? Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated cos I'm kinda technically clueless. Many thanks.
I've had some advice from a couple of stand up guys and they suggest I re-post on this forum. Thanks again

Derek

Hi, as requested, can you tell where abouts on the car the noise is coming from?

It could be turbo, transmission, brakes etc.

Simple test - does it only occur when the car is moving? If you rev the engine when its stationary, do you still get the noise? Does it occur when you coast down from speed? (in gear, with the clutch pressed or in neutral).

Thanks all for getting in touch. The noise only occurs when moving. Tomorrow I will try and see if it happens when stationary and I will double check if it happens when coasting down in neutral or in gear with clutch down. Can't believe how helpful you guys are. It's very much appreciated. Cheers

Yeah noise only happens when moving. As you suggested I revved up to around 4000 whilst stationary and it seemed ok. When tested it does occur when coasting down from speed(in gear, clutch pressed and neutral). Any ideas?

are all your drive belts ok and in particular is the water pump ok or the belt tensioner

How do I check all that Teddy? Sorry for me being a useless git.

Well that would indicate that its not to do with the engine/turbo but is something in the transmission.

I would say the 'usual' for these types of whines are the VCU support bearings - would be worth an inspection of them first. It could also be one of the 'main' components - gearbox/IRD/rear diff - so if you haven't changed the oil in them it may be worth doing and checking that the oil looks in an 'expected' condition. Could also be wheel bearings, UJs, CVs (drive or prop shafts) - but you'll be wanting to isolate where the noise is coming from.

GrumpyGel,

Are you deliberately trying to take the **** out of me???(I know you're not but bare with me for comedy purposes). I have said I am not in any way technical. WTF are VCU support bearings, IRD's, UJs, CV's??? I think I would you be cheaper flying you over from New Zealand than trying to check these things(at this point I ain't ruling it out). I bought it at 22k miles and it's now just over 40k miles. I have had it for nearly 8 years and have never serviced it or done anything I should have. In the last 6 months I have had a sticky starter motor(I now start it will a small hammer), wet boot(who know's), rear lights gathering water(I drilled small holes in the lense, works occasionally) a passenger side window that won't go down, and even my magic tree keeps blowing out the f-ing window. Anybody want to buy a low mileage Freelander??? Only joking I still love it. It looks like a big sweet and feels like a tank. I also see other people in my street buying them now. I really need to just bite the bullet and give it some TLC

Freelander lesson #1 : What are the VCU Support bearings:
Important Note : This lesson must be read whilst eating your dinner - and it can't be a Chinese.
1) Kneel down beside (not in front of) your Freelander about 1/2 way down it.
2) Lay on your back or side which ever is most comfortable and conforms to arthritic allowances.
3) Look under the Freelander - you should see 2 steel tubes about 3' long running from roughly between the front wheels to roughly between the back wheels that have a 'gadget thingie' separating them in the middle.
4) If you are unsure what 'steel' is - look at your hands, the things you are holding are made from it.
5) The 2 tubes are "prop shafts" and the 'gadget thingie' separating them is the Viscous Coupling Unit - commonly known as the "VCU".
6) At either end of the VCU are some 'brackety thingies' that are joined to the underside of the Freelander.
7) These 'gadgetie thingie brackety thingies' are the VCU Support Bearings - commonly know as the "VCU Support Bearings".
8) This point is left intentionally blank.

lol,as you appreciate, you should really give the old girl a service (ohh argh). It may not have done many miles, but 8 years motoring deserves some reward :)

You are more than welcome to send air tickets over - preference would be Air New Zealand or Singapore Air - China Southern will not be entertained. Please make it a return ticket with no longer than 2 weeks duration as that it the maximum my body will take without sunshine. From your post, you appear to have all the tool necessary for my engineering capabilities.

Like most on here, I am no Nnija Mechanic - although there are plenty that are. I used to send my cars off to the garage if they needed work done. After getting ripped off by them so many times though, I decided to do all my maintenance myself. I've actually enjoyed doing it and just pick things up as I go long - with help from other non-Ninjas and actual real Ninjas. Most things are quite simple even if they are a bit daunting to start with. You quite quickly pick the slang up that make you sound like a Ninja - or if you get real good at the slang you can call yourself an "motor engineering consultant"!

So you bought it at 22k and have driven over 18k miles without a service. If we assume it probably needed serviced when you bought it (every car I ever bought did) then it could have driven around 28k without a service.

Sorry mate but you're evil personified around these parts for cruelty to Landies!
Begone devil incarnate.

That's got to be some kind of record for a Freelander. I can't actually believe that an owner of a vehicle can drive it for 8 years and X number of miles without a service, then comes and asks for help when it goes wrong. I think we have the answer to that.
I bet there's a mix and match of tyres too.

Ha ha. Totally brilliant. I will try doing what you suggest ASAP. Once I have a grip of the gadgetie, thingie, brackety thingies is that the point I call the police??? Doctor??? Mum??? In which order?

No worries mate. I have booked you on the return of MH370.

I know, I actually do feel awful about it. But it has basically boiled down to a night out with girls with massive knockers or service the car. I genuinely do feel like a wrong 'un. I consider this site my rehab.

Yes thanks Nodge68. There are no mix and match tyres. Goodyear Wranglers all round. Does it really matter how many years/ miles I have covered??? Should help only be restricted to the saintly? Some of us live on a budget that means if it ain't broke then don't fix it. Just because you service your car doesn't make you the arbiter of standards. In my short experience of this site I would think most people give advice freely, but if you think I don't deserve any help then fair enough. I really do respect your point. I will never understand it, but I do respect it. Sometimes it's rewarding just to help someone for the sake of it. Deserving doesn't/shouldn't come into it.

Dear Dr Oberts,

Not sure, but I would have thought the AA or a garage might be more appropriate?
No worries mate. I have booked you on the return of MH370.
Not sure how a flight from Beijing to KL would help. The 'other one', MH17 would help - I stood for a minute's silence at the 2014 pre season tour here of West Ham and Newcastle for 2 Newcastle fans who were on that flight.
Sometimes it's rewarding just to help someone for the sake of it. Deserving doesn't/shouldn't come into it.
True:True - however, there are only a very few that are truly 'deserving' of help (see point 3 below). There are though some occasionally for various reasons that are very Undeserving. Different members will see undeserving differently. Personally I did think there was a glimmer of hope in your initial post and it does look like we have mended your wrongful ways. I feel sure that from now on you will...
1) Be doing 6 monthly services
2) Be doing fortnightly checks
3) As way of recompense you'll be using the car to take the ladies from the local old folks home down to the chippie for their weekly Tuesday night fish & chip suppers.
There are no mix and match tyres.
Good. I don't know if you appreciate the importance of that on Freelander - but if you are in any way tempted to replace any less than all 4 tyres at the same time - stop - research it first.

That s**t is far to heavy for this site - there is no place for it. If you are of any other opinion, please start a thread in the "Anything Goes" forum (a forum for intellectuals and theorists) to discuss it and see what the response is. It is also very likely to get under the skin of respected members, so as a 14th post, I'd recommend toning it down if you feel like you might be hanging around in here.

Right ok chaps. I live pretty close to the city centre. I don't really need a brief. The only reason I run one is because my sister has downs syndrome and alzheimers. I promise you I am am not looking for the sympathy vote. It would be easy, though inconveniant, to visit her without my brief. I am perfectly happy to ride the bus. I am very sorry if I offended anyone with a joke about terrorists. I totally respect that some of you stood up for the minutes silence for those lost. I have plenty of family down south that would say. My cousin in gatesheads best friend died. FFS, get a grip, what are we gonna do, are we gonna be paralysed be these morons and become so precious that we ain't able to make a joke about it??? That's what makes us better than them. Unfortunately **** happens in this world, what are you gonna do about it??? Are you gonna laugh and take the **** out of crazy bastards or are you gonna say, well, yeah, we need to respect these peoples point of view. This is really getting into a bit of existentialism now. I am so sorry if I have offended anyone. But FFs. In my opinion you are all being a little bit precious. And as for not being able to talk to anyone unless you have 500+ posts then seriously. WTF. I would like to hang around on here but this seems a little crazy. Surely the only entry should be owning a landrover??? Who the F are you to say I'm not worthy of the "secret knowledge" that only comes with someone massaging your ego??? You may have noticed I am quite confrontational. It's basically a case of if you walked down the high street and someone asked you the way to the chemists, you're not gonna say "have u been to this chemists before??? have you possibly ignored certain indicators that may have told you that you were gonna be ill?? If so then I'm afraid I can't help you, I could, but it would infringe my right to be so self important that I would have to take the poster of myself off the wall.

FFS Chill!

As far as I can tell, you've upset 1 person on this thread - so why this flack! Hang around and get to know the forum a little - then its acceptable to slag people off - well its still not on a technical forum - but you know what I mean.

TBH mate, I can see his point - if you don't do the basics of looking after your car, then this forum may not be the place for you. Do not pull the "I'm broke" card - cos I'm sure your 2006 car's been taxed, insured and obviously fueled for 8 years - finding a little extra (even if its every couple of years) for some filters and oil isn't going to make much difference. We don't do this to get people who don't give a **** out of trouble. If you're thinking its time to start putting a bit of thought into the motor - then hang around, I'm sure you'll appreciate it.
