what are the mid to late nineties range rover dse engines like with high miles?

indeed, generally when you get above 80k, what is the things to look out for on these motors?

its either a case of buying a 1995-1997 car between 6-7k and 80k miles +, or i buy a 1998-2000 model for 7-10k. with under 80k miles.

i just want an idea of what is going to offer best value for money.

any input, gratefully received. :D

Best option is to see if you can get an 1995-7 thats had all the usual things done, air suspension, air condition and blend motors, cylinder head, clutch.

I went for the later option I bought a 99 with 80k on clock with ful LR history, since xmas its had a new cylinder head gasket, heater matrix, air condition control unit. New disks pads and one caliper. Need a set of blend motors and an air con recharge. I am going to attempt blend motors myself at some point.

I bet you could get a later one that someone is sick of throwing money at repairing it.

thats useful advice - what exactly are the blend motors? not offay with range rovers at all.

gonna be looking at over 80k then by the looks of things.
i did see a t-reg 99 model, with 59k on it for 9k however - thought that seemed like decently low miles and a reasonable price. or at these miles, are you still in for all the things you mention above, given that i would probably get rid at about 70k?

what have your bills added up to so far?

Hi Weave, sorry for the shameless plug, but it might help you out. If you are in the market you will not find one nicer than this. It has 138k on it but the engine is great, been serviced on time and it is mechanically and visually sound. Check out my sign off, I will be selling it shortly for c.£8.5k. Its a 98 S DHSE which for that year was a limited edition to 600 examples - http://www.rrr.co.uk/P38/Models.htm (for spec) - It has all the extras on it (electic seats, mudflaps, heated seats, Harmon Kardon, 18" hurricanes, computer, 2 keys, etc) , the only things that need to be looked at are a re-gas on the air con ready for the summer (blows cold now but needs doing - £50) and at some point over the next 10k or so it will need a nearside front wheel bearing (£200). Other than that it has had £1500 spent on the air susp including compressor and bags, recent Pirelli Scorion Zeros, retrimmed A and B pillars in black cloth (looks stunning inside) etc, new discs and pads, PSI performance tuning box (can be removed if necessary, used for the economy it gives rather than the grunt), has had new exhaust in the past year or so etc. Full colour coding from factory, sidesteps, electric seats (in good condition), 2 prev owners, T & T, FSH, full RR rubber and carpet mats etc. Will take more pics when able. This is gorgeous and even the dealers say how well kept it is etc. As you will see if you come and see it, it is immaculate outside with only 2 very small dents (just being honest), 1 parking, 1 in rear nearside wing (like 50p sizes and could both be done easily if you really wanted to, but you can hardly see them), no stone chips, basically it is my baby.

Forgot to say, does c.33mpg on the motorway and pulls really well with the PSI box, uses hardly any oil.

Check my posts, you can see what I have reported wrong and what I have done about it. Better to buy from someone who loves his car enough to go onto forums etc. Better the devil you know.........

Looks like I may be able to get a new shape RR with my new job (I am a lucky man!!)

I`ve spent 1500 so far since august which is not bad, I try and do most things myself that way im sure its a good job.
Serve blend motors are 3 little motors that control the flappy bits to where the air goes in car, i sometimes get handbook symbol, so popped on computer at garage and blend stall came up, 170 for parts and 8 hours labour, LR is 70 plus vat. So I am not too fussed about it at the moment.

My next project will be the rear two air bags, hopefully it wond take too long too do

Thanks Lads - not actualy ready to buy a car yet.
TBH i am a performance car enthusiast, but i love all motors with soul.

i was posting recently about a series 2a landy that i saw, but it turned out to be too much money.

sonce then my attentions have turned towards a decent towing vehicle, as i have a rally car and i need something decent ot tow with, get tools and spares into, along with a couple of service crew, co-driver and girlfirend. i originally wanted to get an ex-AA van, as i can get VW transporter 3 years old FSH, with tool chest, work bench, hot and cold running water for £4k plus Vat from a guy who deals in commmercials. its a great opion, but with Van, trailer, another car for the people mentioned above, the cost of the Isle of Wight car ferry there and back, its just too expensive. thus a RR would be a goods choice for the reasons above.

however, i have to admit, that a car with a nice upholstery probably is not the greatest choice, with oily mechanics jumping around in it, and i have given a 1995-1996 Toyota Land Cruiser serious consideration. they are extremely torquey, vastly spacious, leather inside, but not so plush that you are scared to sit in it! they have all the toys and breeze past 200k miles. they are massively reliable too, not to mention cheaper.

thinking i will got his way probably.
