Just wanted to say high. I'm just looking to buy my first P38A (guess if you've got the bug you have to pop your cherry sometime)

I don't want or need one as a daily driver, but i am looking for a bit of fun and of course a project on occasion.

I've got a reasonable budget but I am looking at 2000 plates at latest (on the basis of dodging the higher road tax)

I've had a good read of the forum over the last week or so which means right now i've got none of those annoying newbie questions like;
what mpg will i get and
should i get LPG or devil juice?
etc
I'm certain i will have questions at some point and right now i'm focused on finding the right P38 for me as the cash is burning a hole in my pocket! :5bdriving::5bdriving::5bdriving::car::car::car:

Diesel will return 23-26 mpg on average...between 16-22 in town and 22-29 on a long run...more reliable than the V8's and have a strange accelerator pedal response which makes them 'seem' quite slow but are quite spritley when poked.

V8's will return 12-18mpg on petrol and prob average 15-16 on LPG.....less reliable then the Diesel, although the later models are a tad better than the earlier V8's.

People say a V8 on LPG is a recipe for issues...but my 3.9 on gas was great and my current L322 on gas is so far awesome....

the P38 is a good vehicle to DIY maintain if you are handy with spanners....stick around on here and ask questions....never buy a Range Rover with your heart, and never buy one with faults unless you fully understand the costs and frustration involved in fixing it!

LOL, I'm leaning towards LPG if i'm honest. Don't plan on doing mega miles in it, ive got a car for that but i do want to enjoy it.

I may still go for a straight V8 yet, not driven a 2.5 but i do have concerns about the power so i should drive one.

If you want to avoid the inevitable Rover V8 problems, look for an Overfinch P38. Look identical on the outside, but comes with a much more robust Chevy V8 (LS1 I believe).

You'll need to budget a bit higher obviously, but better than the silly RV8. If that is out of your price range, get the derv.

The Diesels are fine power wise - just have a strange pedal response, but my DSE did go very well when prodded hard enough....

As above try to get a post 1999 you won't have any key problems like the early ones ;)

Make sure its a diesel !!!!

I was in the same position as you and looked for a P38 as a Sunday hobby car. If I had to rely on it and use it as an only car, etc then I'd go down the diesel route. However, I driven a couple of diesels and the P38 just isn't the same without that V8 rumble :)

Same here, i love my V8 but if i were looking at a daily commuter i'd compromise fun for reliability & go for the diesel.

When the Girlfriend agreed I could have another P38 and give up my Company car...the only stipulation was it had to be a Diesel....

When I found my L322 and its on Gas.....it works out to be running a few pence per mile cheaper than the Diesel P38...

P38 returned 25-26p per mile and the L322 on LPG returns 21-22p per mile....

I couldn't justify another V8 on Petty.....not as a daily driver:eek:
