Hey everyone, sorry to jump in on a very mature thread but i am a landy owner based in Harpenden and would love to get involved in any club related activity. I currently have 2 series 3 and have owned them for the last 4 or 5 years so not exactly new to the scene but fairly new to this site. I was wandering if there was much activity around here?
thanks
Aaron

Oh right i will try and make tonight but its the old mans birthday so may be an issue, i hav been over to an anglian rovers meet before but missed the entry time as i got lost. I think that was about 2 years ago mind :p
I will try and pop over in the landy tonight then if not make next month as she has a poorly second gear following a laning tirp in the peaks last weekend.

I won't be there either... You may have guessed as I've now moved back to Shropshire... Will try get there next month!!

OK... as some of you know if you were at the pub I had a little eye opener by way of an electrical fire under the bonnet this evening. That said I am now looking at ways to isolate the battery. Of course I know that the simplest way would be to fit one of those nice isolator thingys with the big red handle! Similar to the one in Jai's motor. Is this the only way?

The reason I ask is this...

If I get another fire under the bonnet while I am out and about I must first stop the car... then evacuate all seven people - unstrapping at lkeast two and sometimes three babies from their seats. Then release the bonnet and activate the isolator. If I put the isolator in the vehicle then I diminish its effectiveness since there will be no protection for the length of cable running from the battery to the live side of the isolator.

With this in mind I wonder whether it would be possible to fit a large, normally closed, relay (160 amp maybe) close to the battery, and activate the coil by way of a small switch in the vehicle thereby cutting off the power from a point only inches from the battery itself. Feed for the coil would be via a seperate power source (a small supplimentary battery),

Viable?

Question

dunno where ur coil is on ur tdi?
Face it if the wire was properly secured and isolated as lr intended there would be no issues kinda fixing the problem and not addressing the cause

that said i would have lost my 90 if i didnt carry spanners to hand and a fire extinguisher i never noticed the main alt positive harness had come away from its plastic clips and had worn through behind the engine block thats why i have one fitted

also bare in mind a kill switch is very different to an isolator an isolator will isolate the battery but the engine will continue to run as the alt will still supply 12v to the vehicle system and indeed any short until either the alt fails, the engine is stopped or the load is so great it can no longer supply 12v to the ignition system i.e big fire!

The coil I meant was the relay coil... I do need to activate whatever device I use from the inside though.... Obviously fixing the root cause is the first course of action... but as a safety measure for the future....

Sorry to but in to your conversation and must of been horrible to have a fire start.hope alls ok.I've got a problem myself.defender 300tdi under powered.asked on other threads here and checked turbo and all ok.stripped down tonight to check intercooler and timing on injection pump and timing belt and all ok.does anyone know where I can get the injection pump checked preferably while I wait near bedford,Luton.I'm running out of ideas and can only be pump or injectors.would like to try and get back together for the weekend.hope someone can help.:D

james thats all very good but if used to kill the engine where does the voltage from the alt go that would cause damage if used you would need a resistor/load protector to save damaging the alt such as fitted to the FIA 100a cut of switch with seperate switched ign circuit
