OK I know this question in should be in another section of the forum but the people I want to hear from are reading in here so here goes...

How possible is it to remove my V8 and replace it with a decent diesel engine?

Much easier to sell the V8 and buy a Diesel Disco. It's possible of course, but do you want the hassle?

Its not as easy as you think different engine mounts me thinks, different gearbox (bellhousing) your missing the rad, intercooler, oil cooler, turbo pipes etc, bearing in mind, my pipework cost me about £230 in pipes exhaust pipes and extended oil pipes, loads of bits are different and its never the same as a factory fit no matter what people say. This is especially true if you try and keep it cheap and you start fabricating exhausts and special bits, if you can't replicate them yourself dont do it! When it comes to it you can't replace them with a buy off the shelf item when they eventually wear out, you will end up paying ££££ just to get it on the road again when the time comes.

I'm quite confident with the old landys and I wouldn't bother converting it. You can get one that will cost less to buy complete, in the long run converting isn't a cheap option as the engine often cost more than a complete disco with a years ticket.

TDI Disco are cheap enough now about 700 quid wiv a years ticket. V8's are generally worthles because of the fuel expect to get from £250 to £800 for an old shape one in mint condition with a years ticket and a good rear floor.

My Tdi Install uses all disco and 2.5n/a parts. A few straight lengths of hose and an exhaust downpipe readily available. If any part of my 90 decides to go for what ever reason I can use the standard part with a nifty bit of cutting to get the hoses the right shape.

Would you really wanna miss out on a trip to say, wales, cos you have to fabricate a downpipe as yours has rusted through? or lets say you damaged it offroading in wales somewhere its a l;ong drive home with it broken! Its makes more sense when you can go buy one off the shelf and fit it in half an hour? These things always go wrong at the worst possible moment. Trust me! Jai

Ryder how about meeting up in a couple of weeks so we can do a bit of Preventative Maintainance before we leave for salisbury. I know the 90 could do with all its oil changinig, props greasing stuff like that. Jai

Put it this way you Rangie boys better take out a mortgage just to get your three motas there! or borrow Alfs trailer and tow one of them! There and back! Jai

With fuel prices around 116p per litre,

@ 17MPG you will use 6.75Gallons 6.75x4.546= 30.68Litres so 116x30.68= £35.60 plus one way without any laning.

There and back £71.20 in fuel plus extra fuel used laning call £90 in fuel mabe more! I Hope My tdi's cheaper than that! At this rate I'm tempted to put on the road tyres change them over when I get there!

have yu costed out a trailer - when i took my '40 to France , it was £180 for 2 weeks. wots a w/e going to cost you?

Jai, if you put your road tyres on, you'll probably use just as much fuel, due to carrying the extra weight of your mud tyres. Weight = Fuel.
Maybe a few less pasties and cream teas while you're in Devon. LOL

As ever this thread grows at a mile a minute, just catching up!

Ryder, why change the V8? I agree you are better off selling it and buying a diesel one - quicker, easier and better in the long run. Ask Glenn321 what he just got one for off fleabay.

Jai, petrol and travelling costs. Always a nasty one that. At least petrol has come down a bit, I saw unleaded at 110.9 in Liverpool, prices are variable at the moment, would expect anywhere between 112.9 and 114.9 per litre for unleaded. Diesel is similarly variable, average I think is in the 124.9 to 126.9 per litre.

On a run the Rangey will do low 20's mpg, laning it's down to about 12mpg. Just sit back and watch the needle move:eek:

I reckon for Salisbury I will do a whole tank travelling there and back, and probably 3/4 tank laning so about £140.00. With camping and beer and food, a weekend away will be round the £200.00 mark.

The idea of a weekend tinkering and doing maintenance sounds like a great idea, I've not got much to do to mine (at the moment!) once the oil pump is back on but happy to give you guys a hand.
