Lee give the middle where the rivits are a wire brush and make sure ts really smooth. Ideally you need inserts to protect the tube but at the very least give it a good clean and paint so theyre smooth.

i dont suppose anyone knows where i can get inserts do they? i've had a look but cant find anything.

You can use bicycle rim tape, it's not very wide but easily available and cheap
