My 2004 freelander 2.0 td4 won't start properly. It turns over, goes to start then fails, if you continue to turn it over it starts eventually but loads of white smoke comes out of the exhaust. I have replaced the fuel filter, air filter, glow plugs. Checked the fuel pump at the rear of the car and am now stuck. Anyone have any idea?

White smoke occurs when raw diesel comes through the exhaust completely intact and unburned. Some causes of this include…
Faulty or damaged injectors
Incorrect injection timing (could be a worn timing gear or damaged crankshaft keyway).
Low cylinder compression (eg caused by leaking or broken valves, piston ring sticking, cylinder and/or ring wear, or cylinder glaze)
When white smoke occurs at cold start, and then disappears as the engine warms up, the most common causes are fouling deposits around piston rings and/or cylinder glazing. Use of our Flushing Oil Concentrate and FTC Decarbonizer address these respective problems.

Water entering combustion spaces will also create white smoke. Faulty head gaskets and cracked cylinder heads or blocks are a common cause of water entry, and are often to blame. Unfortunately, expensive mechanical repair is the only proper solution here.

As soon as the car starts it works as it should, no power drop of and no smoke at all, the smoke I think, like you said is un burnt fuel that has been pumped in as the engine turns over.

i just put up a quote tbh

the answer, probly, will be in that text

the very least i'd do with any new (to me) doozle enjin is flush and change oil/filter ;)

Is this only when cold? If so, Try turning ignition on for 5 seconds, then off, then repeat 4 or 5 times. Then start the car. If she takes then i reckon you've got injector troubles and nee d to do a leak back/leak off test.

Did you have any luck sorting this FreelanderDave, I have the exact same thing on a 2003 TD4, just done a full service around a month ago and today I changed the glow plugs. Two were faulty, but the problem is still there, no improvement at all. My next job was going to be to locate and test the heater plug timer/relay, but after that I'm stuffed! I've had the TD4 about 3 years and it's always been like this, so I think it's time to sort it out!

Won't be the glow plugs......they don't come on unless it's below 5 degrees

wondering If the probs. in this thread might be related to a faulty temperature sensor

there are at least 2 .. for coolant and air-intake ..
and the bosch m.a.f. evidently incorporates air-intake-temp sensing in its circuitry
( the pierburg doesn't .. but rover-ron covers that via his m.a.f wizardry )
and later model hippos have that extra sensor within the intercooler hose setup
which .. i think .. is temp. related ( not 100% sure about that )

the ecu takes temp. into consideration when altering injection timing (td4)
( no idea if that effects cold starting .. 'n produces white unburnt diesel smoke )

the glow-plugs also have a post-heating phase
page 71/72 on this .pdf ..

my glowplug dashboard light flashed very briefly on cold startup yesterday ..
no idea why .. given the midday local ambient air temp

( edited to add ) .. g.d.l came on today for 3 secs. on cold startup ..
outside temp was about 15c

could be the fuel pump or fuel rail pressure sensor connection,,, it wont start until the fuel rail pressure is correct , try turning the ignition on a couple of times and waiting for the pressure to buildup before starting ,

Don't know if you got this sorted, but I tried a full tank of fuel with a bottle of Wynns Injector Cleaner and it seems to have made a difference. It still occasionally starts a bit lumpy after being parked at work for 10 hours through the day but starts perfect in the morning after around 13 hours standing???????? Think I'll try another bottle of injector cleaner and see how it goes.
