Guess the engine is still too hot to open and have a look to check where i am at, although i just did a full flush and coolant change a month ago if that helps?

The heater won't work brilliantly (relative term) without being pumped but if the coolant in the block starts to boil the gases will sit in the heater matrix and the air blower will cool significantly.

If there's nowhere easy to pull up use your hazards and pop the bonnet. Better to pretend you're broken down than actually breaking down :eek:

Have you checked to see if any of the pulleys are jammed? Water pump? Alternator ? tensioner?

yes, all turn freely except the big bottom one (sorry not very technical with engines - better in other areas!), which I am guessing is the engine crank?
 
Hopefully a nice easy fix then.

Make sure you order the correct length belt. Although they rarely break, it is something i keep in the back of mine as it is a cheap item to keep as a spare.

Worth checking for any play or rumbling in the pulley bearings. the 300tdi is also prone to badly aligned tensioner which causes chirping and can lead to premature wear
 
OK, thanks for the heads up, will have a thorough check when I have a chance at the weekend in the daylight ;)
 
I had a good inspection this morning, and the pulley tensioner bearing has gone, which resulted in shredding the belt :eek:

New belts and a new tensioner pulley ordered and will pick them up today to get the old girl back on the road - with spares also ordered ;)
 
You can buy a replacement bearing as well for a few pounds. In which case you could have a spare tensioner as well.

I don't have a vice or press to get the old one out and the new one in as I did see they can be changed, so will have to get the whole lot, but too be honest its costing me £50.00 for 2 belts and the tensioner which I didn't think was too bad.

I did the bearing on mine, and cursed the whole way through the job. The bearing is easy to remove - IIRC i used a vice, and a socket as a drift, but it may have been different - wasnt hard either way.

But...

I think (again, from memory) that the circlip was an absolute pig to get out. Ive read others saying the same too.

I think you can get the whole unit for under £20, and, in future, id do that, rather than waste time on the original.

I reckon it must have been going for a while, as she seems a lot quieter and not getting so hot, and also seems more power to the steering (might be making that all up in my head to justify the costs), but got nice shiny new parts under the bonnet....

Also heaters blow out hot air too, so I reckon she will live on with no harm done :cool:
