Glad I don't have a P38, sounds way to complicated to troubleshoot!
Anyway, I seem to think if you look on the RPI website, there is some info for checking the MAF sensor, might be worth a look. I wonder also if there could be a lazy lamda sensor?

after a quick glance at that site i read:
The air flow meter wires can be accessed by pulling the rubber boot carefully backwards along the cable. Under here you will find the following wires. Red with Black trace = Sensor ground, Blue with Green trace = air flow signal, Brown with Orange trace = Ignition live 12 volts and Blue with Red trace = CO trim value. A digital multi meter should be used and connected to the sensor ground and CO trim value wires. The values that you are trying to achieve are below and these are adjusted by the screw on the side of the airflow meter.

Sort of, did you read further down about changing the Lucas 3AM to a Gems MAF. The wires and values above are for 3.9 V8 running Lucas Hotwire injection. I believe CO trim is done by the ECU on a P38 in response to lamda value. I would guess to check if MAF is working, test for +12v in, Sensor ground and then check scaling, values should change as engine revs up/down. Would say Eightinavee is the man to ask if he's about.
