I run outside while the missus is doing Sunday dinner, and it’s definitely puffing I can even see fumes coming up through it and I’m sure I can hear a chuffing noise (don’t suppose you live anywhere near Weston-super-Mare do you??)
Presumably I need to take it all apart maybe send you some pictures so you can kindly tell me what I need to replace point me in right direction ??
Not near Weston. Life has some mercy! :)

Post some pics of the head and gasket when you have got it off.

Thanks guys I have it half apart but light stopped play, I will post pictures up in the next day or so when it’s off and would be so grateful for any input!
Nice to see you are getting stuck in.
If it is anything like a Series 2a my ex son-in-law and I did a regasket in an evening. He just turned up at my place after nightfall and intimated that we were "changing the head gasket". Couldn't refuse him and sho nuff it got done and he drove the Landy away after a coupla hours.
I know you want to do a lot more checking than we did, but TBH it really ain't that difficult.
So pleased you have got into it!!!:):):)

Don't worry. Whatever's wrong with it, just fix it. Cancel next years trip to Callela. That's my advice to anyone who's buying one. My best suggestion is research how long a defender has been on sale. Check completed listings on ebay. Look at how long it's been advertised on facebook. The longer it's been available for sale, the shitter it will be. If it's shit, offer the pits then spend money on it. Buy a defender cos you love em. If you spiral into negative thinking because you resent being ripped off, see it as a money pit, etc. then you are just ruining your own long-standing desire to own one. Before you know it you will hate how the windows wind, the moss on the rubber seals and the water in the footwells. Buy one to indulge yourself. Imagine you're buying a box of dairy milk, full of fat and the individual chocolates packed by an unhappy production line worker who picks her arse and doesn't wear a hairnet. You're marrying a fat ugly bint and your mission is to make her beautiful (if you have bought it for 7k or less).

It isn't like a Series engine.
Turbocharged, head is overstressed, and prone to cracking.
Needs to be taken apart, cleaned up, head and block examined carefully for cracks and warping.
Swirl chambers will most likely need to be replaced, injector shrouds checked.
If you try and do this in a hurry on a 19j, you will end up doing it several times.

Even if the head is OK, there may be cracked pistons, in fact, that is highly likely.

...and that is why I said IF.
AND
I know you want to do a lot more checking than we did,
I did explain I had never worked on this engine before, just gave a general overview.
sounds like you've got some valuable input there Turbs!
I will step back and give you the floor.:):):)
Would it not be better to

Hi, I feel a bit of a prat I have bought defender without getting anyone to check it ...
The Green Oval itch destroyed my ability to walk away.

As long as you have time, space and a few decent tools, I think you will master this minor set back. Best of luck!

Okay so next update!! I have just taken all the pushrods out and the third one from the back was bent does that mean more damage is done or do I just need to replace that pushrod?

@Turboman I don’t really know what this means but there’s quite a few cracks everywhere what do I do next mate??
