Hi earlier I rather stuidley filled the engine oil in my 90 a little bit too far, as it was clean unlike the current oil in the sump it took a while to see amy change on the dipstick therefore I have managed to fill it to the high level / notch in the dipstick.

Is my 90 still safe to drive or will I have to remove some of the oil before my 20mile commute in the morning??

If so would it be possible to simply undo the sump plug slightly, not fully to only allow a small ammount to drain??

Your help would be much apriciated as I have to leave at 5 am

My Dad Would NEVER advise driving with too much oil.

Even if it means RE-doing the whole thing I WOULD remove oil.

I think it can blow all sorts of seals??

yes, loosen the sump plug enough to let some dribble out (don't remove it completely!)

It shouldn't be too bad if its right at the full mark, but any above that and I'd remove just a little of it.

Hi thanks for all the prompt advice this eavning, I've now loosened the sump plug and drained enough oil so that it lies around half way between the normal and high notches on the dipstick.

Unfortunatley I didn't have a plug socket or spanner large enough so in desperation resorted to a pair of stilsons, however although the edges of the bolt now wont be ideal, my 90 probably wouldn't hurt with an oil change and in which case it can be replaced then.

The only sump plugs I've seen are 13mm

yup - the 1/2" square drive from yer socket set fits nicely.

From what i know the main danger of putting too much oil in is that it will be sucked up past the piston rings and make the engine run away on its own oil?

This is the first time I have had to access the sump plug and it looked very similar to the image below, although I was sure they were smaller, when trying different sockets, it proved a larger size than the steel wheelnuts on my defender, although the edges of the nut were flush with the threaded neck it screws in to so im not sure whats up with that??

I'll dig the camera out tomorrow just so you can see - or I suspect its just me making a silly mistake and looking like a total arse

As for using burning engine oil, I've also heard of the damage overfilling can cause to various bearings seals etc within the engine although I'm no expert on the specific ones effected.
