I changed my auto gearbox on my 3.9 a few months ago as it lost all drive ( but it had done 172000 miles ) Yesterday, after about 1000 miles of use, most of which was a run to plymouth and back the replacement box broke. I can get reverse and weirdly I can also get reverse if it's put in first gear but I can't get forward drive. The fluid is black and stinks. I'm fairly sure the box I bought was already on it's way out.

I'm fedup of putting auto boxes in. They're heavy, they use alot of fuel and when they break it's prohibitively expensive to repair them and after 2 failures I just don't trust them and can't rely on them.
I've decided to do a manual conversion so I'd love to hear from anyone who has done this, anyone can tell me the bits I'd need to convert etc and (here's hoping) anyone who might have any of the bits kicking around that they'd care to donate to a now skint landy owner :(

So far I think I need

V8 Manual box
Clutch master, slave and pipe
Manual pedal box
Manual crossmember
Gearstick gaiter surround
Flywheel and bolts
Clutch

its worth removing bell housing and pump housing to check cluth A and B before fitting a used auto often quite reasonable to replace ,putting a manual box in wil require a spigot bush in rear of crank ,oil cooler pipes etc

Hi James, it's the ETC I'm interested in. Can you remember everything?
I'm not putting another auto in. I regret not converting to manual last time

I has a spare flywheel and clutch cover :p Cover needs a clean so I may do that later actually seeing as I've got nothing else to do today thanks to the snow…..

engine is just a matter of removing drive plate assembly and fitting spgot bus plus fly wheel and clutch, you wouldnt have o fit oil cooler if you didnt want to , most r380s have the bypass housing attached or is simple to fit if pipe housing is , gear box is the same length etc so is just a matter of bolting in ,theres 4 wires in a loom that goes to switch at front of auto 2 need joining to allow engine start the other 2 need extending to reverse switch , t/box and g/box mounts to fit crossmember, ill have a think on the rest

Would an RRC have the same 'box? I read somewhere that they have a viscous center diff? If so can I use the transfer box off my auto with the RRC box? I presume the crossmember, clutch system etc would fit straight on?

Ok, a bit more research suggests that only post '95 RRC were fitted with the R380. How do I tell it apart from an LT77 and is an LT77 really that bad? Does anybody know if the transfer box will fit off my autobox?

R380 is where 6th gear would be

nothing wrong with either box afaik but ask james :) I went R380 due to finding a good one cheap but now have to convert it to fender spec

all the lt230s can be swapped beween auto and manual, rrc gearbox is the same as disco , borgwarner can be fitted from an rrc to disco ,auto or manual but you need front prop and t/box mount as well as mount and prop differ to lt230

The Borg warner seems like a backward step though (assuming it is vLSD that doesn't lock) - I want my diff to lock when I'm offroad.
So I can just pop the transfer case from my Auto onto the new Manual then?

What are your thoughts on R380 vs LT77 James?

v/c will lock , and is useful in given better traction whilst manouvering ie snow patches and good traction spots ,bendy tracks etc were you dont have to bother with engaging lock and unlock ,but they are positives for both bw and lt230, r390 is slightly better though a good g suffix lt77 is very good ,but wouldnt have previous suffixes or later h, all r380s have easy oil cooler connection not all lt77s do both fit the same they do use slightly different linkage

Thankyou James, you are a star :) so the borg- warner box is a manually locking diff that also has an LSD function? Do the levers match up to the holes in the discovery bodywork?

I ask as there is a scrap manual V8 rangerover that the owner is happy to sell me everything I need to convert from. Unfortunately I don't know how old the rangerover is...

v/c isnt a manual locker (it does take a some slip initially to lock a second or so )or an lsd , it locks solid when theres a differential between axles of speed but also acts somewhat like an lsd through its inherrent stiffness, near the drain plug is a raised lozenge shaped machined surface often needs a quick emery to read

I've been to the scrappy and all the manual v8s are from range rovers age unknown and I can't get under them to see what suffix. If I convert to manual using an LT77 is it relatively easy to swap to an r380 at a later date? Would an r380 from a tdi fit using an lt77 bell housing?
