My 200tdi is now officially stripped and dead so my choices are to spend £1000 a 300tdi as another shooting/dog walking/snow/flood toy or sell my car which is fast and fun and spend £3500-£4000 a TD5 as my only vehicle?

I have searched but cant really find an answer on the TD5 off road performance. I don't do extreme off roading, just a few green lanes and go across some pretty muddy/boggy fields when out with the dogs(got my 200tdi stuck twice). Also the on road performance, are they sluggish or nippy and do they handle well? Obviously I wouldn't want to race the thing around but was wondering how smooth they are?

Why would a td5 be worse, basically same vehicle underneath with a more refined engine, if you find you need more power get it remapped.

Buy a 300 and throw 3k at it? :D

Tempting but not really an option!

I don't really know anything about the td5 other than it doesn't have diff lock so didn't know how it performed off road. I saw a video on youtube once of a bloke trying to get off his drive in the snow in a td5 but kept spinning! I'm guessing that was more down to him than the landy?!

Some do have diff lock depending on year/model, lots of info on the www if your now intrested in D2s

Yeah defiantly down to driver or poor tyres, i really like td5s, my friends cruises better at 70/80 than my v8 , and is a lot better in fuel, it tows his 1.5ton boat really well barley notice its there, not as fast off the mark as my v8 but npt by much, they do have there problems as im sure you know but every landy does, personally id go for a TD5 thats my plan when funds allow anyway :) ohhh and regarding no diff lock its all done by a computer which seemes to work well when i have been in it on snow and sand

If you go the TD5 route consider this:

1. Manuals have a Dual Mass flywheel - don't know how that would cope with an uprated TD5 engine;

2. Auto gearboxes cope well with a more powerful, tuned TD5 but their Torque Converters (TC) are a bit suspect. So if you like a TD5 auto, budget for a replacement upgraded TC - £275 + labour. Incidently TD5 auto's are brilliant off-road as well as on-road.

All years have Traction Control which works really well, but earlier versions also have the internals for a centre difflock and only need a link cable. Look for '98 to '02.

Overall comment of the TD5 in terms of on-road performance:

They weigh 2250 kgs
In std trim they have 136 bhp
They are permanent 4 wheel driver.

Std TD5's, a ball of fire they are not! However, with a de-cat; de-EGR and a re-map they are pushed up to around 170bhp and perform very satisfactorily.

Thanks both! Next question........where can I find which trim has what? My budget would probably stretch to a 2000-01 model.

Maybe a silly question but how do you know if it has ACE as no adverts I've seen state it?

Dead simple !

The ACE hydraulic rams are in the front and rear wheelarches; plus in the engine bay rhs you will see a cream-coloured header tank - if it has 2 caps the car was built with ACE. If it's only got one the car did not have ACE when built.

Obviously the cars could have been modified since build, but if it's still got the rams, it's likely to have ACE.

Thanks mate, these disco's with technology are all new to me!! Next question.........how do I know if it has CDL fitted?

The only way is to lay under the car and feel above where the front prop joins the front of the transfer box front casing.

Youre feeling for a small spigot sticking up.

As a rule, all cars before the middle of 2002 had the cdl internals.

Cheers.

I must also add that I think that the TD5 discovery is a great all rounder !.

It is becoming evident as they are starting to age that the biggest threat to them is rear chassis rot, so I would would look closely at this area when you are looking.

Cheers.
