Hi all

Have owned various LRs over the years. Current is an '04 FL1 which, actually has been pretty faultless.

However, now in a stage where I need a bigger car (dogs/children/holidays etc.) and so sizing up a Discovery. Am toying between a Discovery 3 and Discovery 4 and would appreciate some advice.

My needs are pretty simple as, in reality I don't drive a lot. Probably 2-3 times a week and all distances are quite short (due to geographic boundaries of living on a small island.) So it would be main car for ferrying kids around the island, and trips to the dump, as well as light towing. The main motivation here is for holidays away (to mainland and Europe etc.) with all the junk that kids and dogs and the wife need.

Decent 2nd hand Discos don't come along too often here, but at the moment I've got an option on

2007 Disco 3, TDV6 GS, 66k miles. FSH. £13750. Good condition but obviously been used well.
2011 Disco 4, TDV6 XS, 31k miles. FSH. £24500. Apparently it's an ex-Jaguar / LR demonstrator so has additional toys on top of XS spec. Did 28k miles in its first 2 years, then only 3k in the last 2 years. Pretty well immaculate condition, clearly never been off-roaded.

(Bear in mind prices here are ex-VAT)

I would usually plump for the newer car for general peace of mind but with such a jump in price, I'm wondering if it's really worth it. Cars here will never really do really high mileage (not physically possible...!) and equally week in, week out, I'm not going to be doing massive mileage. I figure I will keep this for a decent period of time.

Any thoughts on a decision process between the two? Is there anything particularly between the 3 & 4 to make it worth the jump?

I've never been in a Disco 4 and the only Disco 3 I've been in belonged to (and was being driven by:)) one of the Royal family and it was unsurprisingly lovely. As I say, I've never been in a disco 4 but from what I read it's moved the game on if you spend a lot of time on the motorway (the 3 litre diesel is stronger and more frugal than the 2.7 apparently), is slightly nicer inside, apparently has updated terrain response software and has a few external design tweaks.

So unsurprisingly it is 'better'. I probably wouldn't notice any significant difference except from the extra grunt, so it depends how discerning you are.

As I have limited experience I only responded to give your thread a bit of a bump and to hopefully get a response from those with more experience of the later cars than me.

Nice dilemma to be in though - gissago mister.

I have driven a disco 3 and thought it was one of the best cars i have ever driven in.I have a friend who has had a disco 3 from new and he does high mileage he changed to a disco 4 about a year ago and thinks the disco 4 is far far superior to the 3 he said there is no comparison but as you say at £11000 more it should be and it probably is good luck

Well after a lot of procrastinating, went for a Disco 4. Neither of the two listed above. So far, very happy :D

I've just driven my dads lr4 sdv6 auto 650 miles to the new forest and back with our caravan and it was very nice to drive. Would have on in a breath

I looked at buying a 3 myself but have seen so many bad things, I would buy a 4 if I could afford one
